I am 19 years old, and I write different pieces every once in awhile, and I am just wondering what steps I must take to try out stand up comedy. Thank you

the best way is going to an stage where there is no people around and go onto the stage and ask yourself can i do this. you have to be honest, just imageine standing there with people watching you. you have to decide if you can cope if there is a large crowd. most stand up comics do it and become stage fright and never do it again because dealing with the crowd i s a lot different. you might have the best material and if the crowd worries you and frightens you don,t do it.. the audience targets the comic to test him and that is why you get hecckled most of the time. but if you are not frightened of the audience and keen to do it. you have mastered your nerves .the best way to get laughs is go to open mikes that goes for five to ten minutes and get ust to the audience. never go to a big audience and you feel you can not do it. I was at the brunswick raw comedy festival a few years back. i did my piece and the next comic was off the street and thought he could do it. he only lasted a coulpe of seconds. the audience got to him and he coudnt continue on. so its best interest you get to feel the stage when there is none around and try out a couple of jokes.and do open mikes as much as you can. you can aslo practice at home with a taperecorder, try out a couple to an invisable audience and get the motivation up. and each night do at least ten minute of practice after awhile you can do half hour and eventually when you do the big gigs you then be able to handle the audience and be able to later on down the track control the audince in the palm of your hand. it takes many months of practice and if you want a career it will take time

Almost all comedy clubs have an open mic night. Make a list of all the clubs within 50 miles of your place and call them for their open mic info. Get your 2 to 3 minute set ready and go for it.

Rehearse in front of a full length mirror and practice holding a microphone while you're doing your routine.

Consider taking an improv or acting class. You can also meet other standups at the clubs and don't be afraid to ask them questions - it's all about networking to get even more info.

just keep doing it. go to open mic nights in your area - or if there aren't any organize a talent show with other people and showcase youself. write a lot. work on your jokes with friends and family. get out and entertain and meet people - the only way to do it is to just get up there and try it out. if people think you are at all funny you'll know after the first time. if you like performing you'll know that too.
