There are a few decent supplements you can get, such as protein powders, creatine and aminos like glutamine and argenine. I also like ALA and ZMA. All these are natural products that already exist in the body anyway, but become depleted in athletes.

Good nutrition is key in a gaining program. You should get an almost excess of protein, at a minimum 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day, if you are actively lifting. As an amateur powerbuilder, I get more like 1.5-2 grams per day, spread out over about 6 meals. Also a good dose of carbs and good fats is optimal (called macronutrients). Since it's very difficult to obtain that much protein throughout the day from just whole foods, this is where most people turn to protein powders.

Be sure to cut out the junk food, empty calories, bad carbs and fats, and any other unhealthy habits such as smoking or excessive drinking as these simply hamper efforts in the gym and will actually prevent growth.

You should only take supplements if you're a serious lifter where your workouts are of sufficient intensity. It'd be a waste of money otherwise.
