And why are they painted the same color as the car? Doesn't make sense that they have plates on the car, but they cover them so you can't read it. I know it's illegal for you to cover the license plate. so I just don't understand why they do this.

Most cars are designed with a ugly spot for the rear license plate. So to make the car sleek they paint the fake rear plate the same colour of the car, for advertising. Also you will almost never see a front plate because most car company's never take then into account when designing the car.

1. Cars only need license plates if they are being driven on public roads and lands. Studio sets do not require license plates.

2. License plates change every so often. How do you decide which state's plate will get the customers into the dealerships the fastest? The license plates in the comercials might distract viewer, especially if somebody gets cute with vanity plates (BUY-USA on a Kia ad or GMC4ME on a Ford comercial).

It's a commercial for the car, not the plate or the state in which it is registered.

the requires one on the car
the paint is over plastic and peels off.
SO the car can be driven to location for the shot.
