It is like raising the argument or discussion to a higher plane. You discuss your argument in terms you both consider appropriate conduct; Like you both agree that lying, cheating, stealing and murder are unacceptable. Your agreement on these values it the moral authority or ground rules for your discussion.

Each society has a set of values or code of conduct, if anyone violates these "morals" then by the laws of "Moral Authority" they will suffer the consequences of being denounced by the other members of that society.

it is you questioning whether your actions are noble, or callous etc.. based upon some Moral Compass that is comprised of your upbringing and what you currently believe in..
