Shampoo the carpet and see what happens... might be a flea or mite allergy?
Vaccuum more often?
There are different things you can try.

Anything can trigger an allergy. Carpet cleaner (they love to roll around on the carpet and rub their faces on the carpet), changes in laundry detergent, fabric softener, air freshener, shampoo's and conditioners. If he is not still on the medication from the vet, try Benedryl. The dosage is 1mg per pound of dog. Only give him this if he is no longer on the meds that the vet gave him. It could cause a fatal reaction by mixing the two. My dog is deathly allergic to Olive Trees and the vet told me to use Benedryl and it's worked miracles for him. I just read your update....If you've already tried Benedryl and other meds, my next suggestion would be to find a new vet. My dog was misdiagnosed twice by his previous vet as having urinary tract infections but, he never got better. I took him to my sons vet only to find out that he never had a UTI. He had a spinal injury. Not all vets are good ones. If your vet hasn't been able to figure this out after all of this time, I really would try a new vet.

You should go back to the vet and have an xray taken to make sure his upper respiratory infection has not turned into something more serious like pneumonia. Its very unlikely this is an allergy, as allergies in dogs are typically shown by skin irritation, facial swelling, itching, feet biting, hair loss. Sneezing and coughing are not common symptoms of enviromental allergies. Your dog may need a different type of antibiotic.

I would call the vet and bring that idea up to him about the dog being allergic to the carpet, and see if he has any medicine for that. good luck.

It's quite possible that he is allergic to the carpet. I had one dog who was allergic to nylon, but luckily we have mostly hardwood floors.
The other possibility is that he is allergic to something that is used to clean the carpet. Do you use shampoo, or something scented on the carpet?

So sorry Emily. Time to put hard wood floors in. Or move to another home.
