I am 24 M and I am concerned over a recent physical (fasting) I had. I received my report and I had a high sodium level. My sodium was 145. What does this mean? Should I be concerned? How do I reduce these levels? Should I go back to the doctor? Below are my levels, and I included other levels to give more information if it helps:

NA 145 mmol/L
K 3. 8 mmol/L
CL 105 mmol/L
CO2 24 mEq/L
Glucose 90 mg/dL
CA 9. 7 mg/dL

Thank you. Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully I am concerned over nothing.

These are all very normal looking labs.
Normal ranges:
sodium 135 to 145 mEq/L
potassium 3.7 to 5.2 mEq/L
chloride 96 - 106 mEq/L
CO2 20-29 mEq/L
glucose up to 100 mg/dL
calcium 8.5 to 10.2 mg/dL

electroclytes in the bloodstream have to do with the "structure" that make up each bloodcell. each bloodcell is mostly made up of sodium, potassium and h2o ( water ). there should be an equal balance of each for optimum health. too much of either one and your off balance. try eating more bananas and drinking 8) 8 oz glasses of water a day while reducing your salt intake. i wouldn't be too concerned unless your having problems with your kidneys or feel an urgent need to urinate often during the dayor at night. try a banana a day and make sure you drink those 8 glassesof water then try another fasting test in 6-8 months (if your insurance will allow) and see if that has made a difference. if your doctor isn't concerned with your recent levels, i wouldn't be too worried. this is just a wake up call to watch yourself.

I am an ICU nurse, and as far as I can see all of your numbers are normal. Yes your sodium level is on the high end of normal. but not horrible. Try drinking more water, not soda, lemonade, or anything else.... just plain water. It should help your sodium level if you are concerned. That is what we do when we have patients with high sodium we give them water. Hope that helps!

a sodium that high could mean that you were a little dehydrated...
normal is 135-145
K+ normal is 3.6 - 5.5
Cl- nl is 99-110
CO2 is 20 -30
Glu is 60-100
Ca++ is 8.5 to 10.5

looks good...carry on
