4.John is on the middle step of a ladder. He climbs up three steps, down five steps, up six steps and then climbs the last eight steps to the top. How many steps are on the ladder?

We know he's in the middle...Let's call that step 0.
So...Up 3... Down 5 - he's now two down from where he started.
0+3-5=-2
Now. He goes up six steps...
-2+6=4
Then, he climbs 8 more steps to the top.
4+8=12
And we know he was in the middle of the ladder when he started - 12 steps from the top.
So, the ladder is going to have twice as many steps, or 24 steps, plus the one in the very middle - the 0 step, so 25 steps total. (You know it's 25 because if he was in the middle and went up ONE step, there would be 3 - the 0 step, plus the one above and the one below. In this case, there's 12 above, 12 below, and the 0 step)

25 steps......;-)
He was in middle step....say x
Climbs 3....thus x+3
down 5..........thus x+3-5=x-2
up 6.....thus x-2+6=x+4
up last 8....thus x+4+8=x+12
there are 12 steps on top of middle step....so should be 12 steps below the middle step also.....
also 1 is middle step...so total=12+12+1=25 steps....;-)

ladders don't have steps, they have rungs! But it sounds like 24, I'm just shooting from the hip, but I'm pretty smart.
The top step is not step, it is clearly labeled on EVERY SINGLE LADDER ' THIS IS NOT A STEP ' so the answer is absolutely not 25.

draw a picture of the ladder then use different color to mark the steps he stepped on. then count the steps that was marked. And its your answer! good luck.
