Only a biopsy of the lump will reveal if you are dealing with cancer or not. Do not wait any longer, go to an oncologist and have this checked out.
The odds of this being cancer are high . . especially if it has grown in the past year. But, no one knows or can tell . . only a pathology report will have the truth.
Good luck.

Ok, first of all just relax a little. Do you have any other symptoms like weight loss, night sweats, pain in your abdomen? If not, your chances are pretty slim considering you have had this "lump" for that long... I think that you are being childish in giving these doctors such attitude when they are trying to help you. I think that you should have this "lump" investigated. You need to go back to that doctor that was concerned about you an have it CT scanned, x-ray'd or biopsy'd. It is probably just a cyst like most lumps. But, there is still a small chance that it might be malignant and by ignoring it, it will only spread to another part of your body. Also, if it is a cancerous lump, the faster you get it removed/treated, the better off you will be.
You also need to see your MD about your depression and anxiety issues. Treating them first will help you deal with the fear of having a lump on your neck and worrying about unrealistic things like the dying in your sleep. Just try to relax and take it one day at a time. Good luck and try and keep your mind on one problem at a time. Please see your doctor asap!

That's weird that they didn't try to figure out what was wrong the first time you went to the doctor and DEFINATELY by the second time! I mean even if it wasn't cancerous why didn't they explain to you what it was?????? I have anxiety issues too and I am scared to go to the doctor because I have had some really BAD doctor's in the past (that's a whole other story!!!). But it's important for you to go to A doctor. Not neccesarily THE doctor's you went to before. Find out what is wrong and don't stop going to doctor's untill you know. If you have cancer it is best to find out early, and regardless it has to be uncomfortable to have a lump in your throat... I'm having some throat difficulties myself and its a similar situation only mine has only been a year and I have been putting off going to the doctor too.... I think you just convinced me I need to make an appointment ASAP. So I am very glad you asked this question! If you want to talk email me, because our situations sound very similar.

Did the doctor mention if the lump was in the thyroid? Many visible swellings in the throat stem from thyroid goiters. Thyroid goiters are an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Some goiters are caused from hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) or hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone). In either case, it is well documented that an imbalance of thyroid hormone can cause depression.
A note of optimism: Even if it is a malignant thyroid nodule, thyroid cancer has one of the highest cure rates behind skin cancer (upwards of 97-98%).
Please return to your physician to determine if further studies need be done. Good luck!

See more than 5 years have passed since 2001 and you are still alive this shows whatever the swelling you have is most certainly not cancer. So first of all get releived of all your fears. Next go and see a homeopathy doctor because I know homeopathy has wonderful medicines which can cure specificly the problem you have narrated (even if it is a cancer) . All the best.

If its malignant, you have nothing to lose by going to have it checked out. Fear is not going to save you. Go to the doctor, time is on your side, you have already wasted enough of it.
They will immediately want a CT scan of the head and neck and a biopsy of the mass in your neck.
