Our new dog seems to be claustrophobic. We got her from a shelter, so she's not a puppy. My mom says if we can't get her to use her kennel in a week and a half, we won't be able to keep her. Can any of you help me?

We tried putting her food in it tonight, but our other dog, who loves her kennel and LOVES food, pushed past her and got in the kennel to eat the food first. We are going to buy her a kennel of her own, but my mom wants to make sure she'll use it first...

Lock the other dog in a room! Encourage your newer dog to go into the kennel to lay down for naps, but leave the door open. I put a Kong filled with peanut butter and treats to get her to go into the kennel. You have to show tough love if she cries...don't go running back and comfort her. Put her in and walk away. Maybe turn on the radio so she isn't afraid of every little noise she hears.

There is no easy way. And it will take more than a week and a half.
First off, never put the dog in the kennel as punishment. Make going into the kennel a fun experience. For the first few times, leave the kennel door open and just let the dog explore. Put some of her favorite treats in the kennel, too. When she is used to going in and out of the kennel, them you can shut the door. But make sure you have a treat on hand when you do this. As soon as you close the kennel door, give her a treat and open the door to let her out. Do this over and over again, making the kennel time longer with each time.

GOOD LUCK!

Ttell her to go to bed and throw some treats in the back of the kennel, entice her back out use some more commands with treats like sit, lay down, stay ,treat treat treat good dog, good dog, then go to bed good girl, Praise.. treat over and over until she thinks its a game she will eventually be so happy to get a treat she will learn to do anything. Good Luck

get a good sized cage one where she can stand and move around freely then try to put some chew toys and bones in there to give her something to do. put her in the pen but leave the door open and stay there with her and encourage her to stay in there and chew her toys and bones. leave the door open and toys ect in there even when she is not having to be locked up in there herself. you can put a blanket to lay on but i warn you that you better hope she can hold her blatter ect or it will be a nasty mess. tell your mom she needs more than a week dogs who are not brought up this way since puppyhood can adapt to kennels at all different rates of time some sooner that later or vice versa.
