So, it occurred to me the other day. As a Christian, is luck something we are supposed to believe in? Or is everything already pre-destined? I realize that in the big picture, in general, things happen for a reason, like car accidents, proposals, promotions, etc. But what about other smaller things, like winning a game of bowling, or having a test cancelled that you didn't study for? Surely these things don't affect our futures, but is it luck or God's will? Or neither?

Okay, I am a Christian, and I do believe in God. I was just wondering how to approach this issue.

hey,
everything is pre-destined, you should read up on ephesians, it talks alot about the subject.
mind you, it might not state the little things like winning games, so ask yourself this question: Does God has complete control over everything.... or does luck have complete control over everything?

As a christian I don't believe in luck b/c nothing in my life happens by chance. If you win a game of bowling maybe its just as simple as you were the better bowler that day...but God does bless us, when I was in school and I didn't study for a test and it was cancelled or I did well anyway, I just thanked God b/c I knew he was looking out for me. Every good and perfect gift comes from God, not luck.

In Ecclesiates 9:11 we see Solomon making this statement:
"I saw again under the sun that the race is not to the swift, and the battle not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise, nor wealth to the discerning, not favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all."
So we see here an element of chance or luck if you will in the affairs of men; however I think it is important to note Ecclesiates is a rather unique book of the Bible, in that it is written entirely from perspective of a natural man without supernatural revelation, making observations of the natural world by the powers of his natural mind.
Two key phrases in the book are "vanity" or probably better rendered "futility", and "under the sun." The conclusion of the author is, that if you look at everything there is under the sun, none of it has any apparent lasting value. It was only after Christ appeared that "Life and immortality were brought to light." (II TImothy 1:10)
I think in the context of New Testament doctrine it is an expression of unbelief when we resort to luck and fortune as guiding principles in our life. God doesn't want us to rely on dumb luck in the course of life, but to be led by the Holy Spirit and faith. I think you will find from a practical stanspoint that preoccupation with such things tends to be a distraction and leads one away from the things God wants us to give our attention to in the furtherance of His Kingdom in the earth.

In God's GLORY, there is none such as LUCK. This is why a "TRUE CHRISTIAN" do not believe in horoscopes, and such... God said, He has plans for us, not to condemn us but prosper us... winning the bowling is something that you have achieved, it's God's will, for you to realize how great is He to give you the power, strength, and hand to play... I hope you got it! God bless you!

There is no such thing as luck. Many happenings are co-incidences. If you choose to disbelieve in God - you will be eternally separated from Him. All other happenings are our trials and tribulations in life by which we will be judged on how we overcome them.
