here is an example:
you have a boy/girlfriend. you and boy/girlfriend break up. you now realize how good things were before this bad thing happened, and it caused that bad thing to make you realize it.

What you feel is bad, judge is bad, experience as bad that happens to you was not planned to be bad by you. But even if it was something you planned that did not turn out right, the meaning of the quote remains the same. To open your eyes means symbolically "to make you aware of something you had seen but not understood before." The idea is that you will appreciate some of the good things you had that you were taking for granted or ignoring once you have experienced, learned from, learned the cost of the bad things.

It's the dichotomy of the opposites. When something bad happens, a person realizes how good the good things were. You don't realize how high a mountain is until you look down in the valley. Without black a person really wouldn't fully understand white or vice versa. All the same thing.

When everything is going your way, you don't notice that it is all going right for you. Life is just a given then. When something happens that is negative, you can see that you had it better before, particularly if the negative is something serious. Human nature is to want life to be easy, but it won't be all the time. The more you experience, the more grateful you get about what you already have.

Sometimes it means seeing all of the bad things before you start to see what the good things are, or sometimes seeing the bad makes you realize the good things that were there all along.

Sometimes we take for granted some of the good things in life until, unfortunately, something bad happens and makes us open our eyes to those good things. For instance, having running water is a good thing we take for granted, until the bottom of your water tank breaks open and you don't have water pressure. Boy do you realize how good it is to have running water then.

it's saying that something bad may make you realize that other things are better than they seem. a great example if if something happens to someone you know and the "bad thing" for you is the sympothy you feel for them. it would make you realize that if it happened to you, the good thing that turned bad for them that you have going good, would be bad if it were different, but it's not something you typically acknowledge as anything you appreciate, until you have reason to consider what being without it would be like.

All the good things in your life are not appreciated until something bad comes along, and you say "Wow, I never noticed that" about a good thing.
