It is special, because you have a very well-adjusted and social cat. It is a relatively instinctual behavior, but it shows just how healthy and comfortable your cat is around you. Good job!

It is perfectly normal, In fact they (whoever they are) are trying to breed a more loyal (dog like cat) and one of the traits is fetching. I have had three cats that fetched, not only is it a way to get attention but they get exercise. Enjoy it!

My Siamese cat plays fetch all the time, I ball up a piece of paper she chases it and brings it back.. She also likes to play hide and go seek. I think they are very intelligent. I used to have an apartment where I hung my potholders on the wall behind my stove and my cat hated one of them, everyday when i came home no matter how many times I hung it back up, I would find it under a bed or in a closet and each time she would beat it up a little worse. If she saw me using it she would attack it, finally with all her work on it I had to throw it out. It could be a breed thing. Back to the fetch game, she started it, in the beginning she came up to me and dropped a piece of paper next to me and i had to figure out what she wanted me to do, finally I realized what she wanted , threw it and we have played it ever since. Congratulations you have a smart cat.

Hi there... amazingly many cats play fetch more than realized and it's quite normal as well as especially entertaining to participate in this fun activity with our cats.
Here are some videos of cats who play fetch:

We had a cat growing up who loved to play fetch ! She would chase and retrieve the riptabs from 1 gallon milk jugs....it was her favorite game. She is the only cat I ever saw who did this....but we couldnt impress guests with the trick because she was terrified of strangers :(

I have three cats and two of them love to play fetch! The funny thing is that Draco, my tom, will only play it with a pompom, while Minx, my female will only play with a certain type of small mice. They do not touch each others' toys except Draco will play with the one headless grey mouse.
According to James Herriot, a veterinarian who wrote a lot of books, this is unusual cat behavior.

Yes! My 4-year old siamese cat LOVES playing fetch...she especially likes paper towels that u roll and tie in a knot. I think it's the funniest thing to watch her bring that lil ball back to me and wait for me to throw it again lol

It is not common. Most cats won't play fetch. Neither of mine will and none of my previous cats did but one of my husband's cats did.
