Ok, I got a tattoo of my son's footprints on the top and side of my foot 16 days ago. Well, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but the one on the side is red all around it with some raw spots. My tattoo artist told me because I had put on a sock less than a week after my tat and it had actually stuck in a few places that I have ripped some of the skin off. Causing the rawness. And the fact that I walk a lot during the day that the constant motion on the side of my foot is opening the tattoo up repeatedly and that it would probably take another week or two to heal. I've used an aloe lotion to try and help it heal. My tattoo is a 3 part tattoo.... one on the ankle, one on the top of my foot, and one on the outside side of my foot below my ankle bone. The one on the side is still swelling and red, tender. The skin over it is almost like when you get burned. All one piece that's very thin, and only peeling on the edges. What can I do for it to heal soon? I start a new job in a few days

You have to make your own decision. If you think it looks that bad, go see a doctor. It could be infected, either by something you did, or something the tattoo artist did (but lets hope not!). If not, try treating whatever "it" is yourself. Use some A&D ointment, a very thin coat. And don't wear shoes! You should have gotten a foot tattoo in the summer, when you can wear sandals that wont irritate the new tattoo.

That doesn't sound too good there. Keep in mind though that a tattoo actually takes around 3 months to completely heal. Don't use any type of lotion on it -- this may also be causing the infection along with everything else. You can either use triple antibiotic (neosporin, or even the cheap brand) or A&D ointment. IF you have to wear socks, put a loose bandage on it while at work or when you go out, but make sure you take it off and cleanse the whole area with luke warm water - NO SOAP and then reapply the ointment. Do not rub it, if it itches, slap it or gently rub over the area. Also, your tattoo may peel - that is a sign of it healing.

Good Luck!

Oh my gosh, to the answer above i haven't been in the 'business' for 14 years but every good artist knows your suppose to put cream on it!! i use bepathan to and it works a treat, i have both my feet sleeved and it stays feeling like sunburn for a while, its brilliant it HASNT scabbed over as that means the colour stays it, the purpose of the cream is to STOP it from scabbing as much as possible, if you leave it yeah it'll heal faster but it'll look sketchy and would require a re-colour. Just make sure you apply a very small layer of cream and you'll be fine. Oh and don't clean it so intensively that probably irritates it, just stick to the cream from now on

I have two tattoo's (one on my right shoulder and the other on my left shoulder blade) and I used a triple antibiotic ointment cream that you can get at any store and put it on at least four times a day. Wash your foot with a dial bar soap ( it kills germs) at least twice a day and keep off of your foot as much as possible. Wear open shoes and no socks. If you have to wear something than wear pantyhose. They are thin and they can get air in them. Good luck. It is only for a few weeks. Listen to your tattoo artist. If it gets worst then go see a doctor.

Personally- I HATE neosporin. I have been getting tatoo's for 20 years and always use bacitracin. Keep it clean- keep it covered with something(neosporin or bacitracin), and keep it in the air as much as possible. If it isn't better soon- please bite the bullet and go see a dr. Take some sick time, a vacation- whatever but you have to let it heal. Only wear shoes when you ABSOLUTELY have to. Wear bigger shoes, anything so that nothing is rubbing up and irritating it. I am just afraid that if it is swelling red and tender then it may be time to hit the dr's office. GOOD LUCK!

DO NOT PUT NEOSPORIN ON YOUR TATS. EVER!!! AND NO ALOE. IT IS ONLY RECCOMENDED FOR USE ON THE SKIN SURFACE (BURNS) NOT CUTS OR TATS! IT CAN CAUSE AN INFECTION. now as for your situation, go to a doctor immediately, even if its just the E.R. they will prescribe you a bottle of antibiotics for the cellutlitis in your foot. the cotton fibers actually got into your skin and started the infection. it may get worse even after you start takin the pills but it is just your body building up the antibodies. it will also itch like hell right before it starts getting better. stop using ointment on it. just let it dry out and it will push all the puss out from under the tattoo.

Put Neosporin all over the tattoo and cover it with a sterile bandage. The tattoo artist should have told you to do this as part of your after-care, especially since it's on your foot. Leave the bandage on until the redness goes away. After that, you need to keep applying the Neosporin at least twice a day until there is no more peeling or scabbing. Try to be barefoot as often as possible, too. If there is oozing or swelling or you are running a fever or if the tattoo feels hot to the touch, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible.

NO NO NO!!! No ointments -no nothing!!! Let it dry out, hubby had the same thing only it was on the back of his leg (work pants rubbing etc) He went to see a tattooist, which i strongly suggest you do, & was told he had to let it dry out completely for it to have any chance of healing ok. Go see your tattooist again & ask him for strict instructions. If it doesnt dry properly & continues to scab & peel then you will have less chances of getting it redone due to the scar tissue under the skin. Awww go see your tattooist babe PLEASE!!!!!!
