THERE IS ONLY ON TYPE OF DOG YOU NEED:
Most guard dog breeds are awesome but they have their draw backs, let's start with the ones you should not get:
German Shepherd: These dogs bark like crazy and are just plain annoying. Also they look naff!
Rottweiller: Okay, these dogs are awesome but they have been over bred so finding a quality Rottie can be hard. They also require tons of exercise to keep the weight off.
Doberman: Good dog but a bit unpredictable and again requires too much exercise. They are not the best guard dog but look mean.
Mastiffs: Again lovely dog but let's face it Mastiff breeds dont like to bite. They get in front of you and the intruder and basically make the intruder back off. They will attack if pushed too far but if the intruder has a weapon will it be too late? Also - They have serious health issuess and don't live a long time.
Ridgebacks: These dogs are not the best at guarding and cost the earth to buy.
****So what is the best guard dog to have*****
From experience I would say the Japanese Akita (American Version) is by far the best guard dog on the planet. Reason is they have the full package. Here it is:
1) They only bark when they perceive a threat.
2) They only require small degree of exercise.
3) They don't mind being left at home alone.
4) They instinctly know who is friend and who is foe.
5) They have no fear about biting an intruder.
6) They are loyal to family.
7) The males grow big and strong. These dogs look hard.
8) They are clean animals that practically house break themselves.
9) The are very intelligent dogs.
10) I have seen my Akita in action. I have seen these dogs in defense mode. I have witnessed there affect on possible threats and the reaction the threat had to my dog. I would have no other dog. These dogs are the FULL PACKAGE.

The bigger the dog, the larger the responsibility. That includes food, exercise, and housebreaking. It's a huge responsibility. So the question should be are your kids responsible enough to take on a big dog, and when they're not, are you? To actually answer your question, German Shepard's would be my first choice. Extremely smart, & loyal. However Golden Retriever's and Labradors are fantastic family dogs.

German Shepards are sweet, loving dogs, but they will bark if someone comes around your house. Also, I am partial to Labs, Collies and Golden Retrievers. You can't go wrong with any one of those four. Also, if you are looking for a guard dog, but a good pet (esp. if you have kids), I would suggest getting a female. Especially if you are ever going to let your dog in the house when it's cold outside, they won't hike and pee on everything!

german shephards need alot of activity if you dont have the room or time to let him run look into a more household dog.
a Rottie will do well indoors and most of theirbarks are enough to scare off anyone
Shar-pei also are good house and protective
i have a Shar-pei Rottweiler mix and he's still a pup but getting big and has a tough bark.

German Shepherd...mine is the sweetest dog ever, but anyone that comes near the house, he'll be the first to let you know. He's very intimidating but it's all just a front. He's the best dog I've ever had. I highly recommend a German Shepherd. They are so loyal and smart.

Do not get a dog that is too big for your yard. Bigger dogs need room to run.... and the cleanup chores for a big dog are bigger in a small yard (not to mention the cost for more food). There are many small to medium sized dogs that are protective, fierce watch dogs. I have a pair of Jack Russell terriers (NOT FOR EVERYBODY!) that nobody would dare cross. Do a web search and research those that are recommended for such tasks and weigh your options.

If you wan't a big dog, I suggest you bring your little chiuahua along so you can be sure they'll get along; just to be sure.

Here's an online quiz that will help you determine exactly the right kind of dog for you.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm
Also please check http://www.petfinder.org
(there was a link from there to quiz yourself for the right kind of dog for you but it's down. However, I hunted around a bit and found the above link, to dogbreedinfo, they have a quiz there also, and it works last time I checked.
