Because they are evil and uneducated. No dog NEEDS to have their tail cropped. They were born that way- that is how nature created them and there is no reason in this case to go against nature. People just do it for the look and it is mean and creul.

Sporting breeds have their tails docked so in the long run there is less tail to be damaged should something happen. Pointers' tails are docked to act as a little flag out in the field and you can see them, a longer tail will curl or drop and not be as easy to see. Also terriers had theirs docked (traditionally) so the tail was cropped before the curl starts and the remainder is straight. This allows the handler to easily pull them out of holes they go into after prey. Many herding breeds (aussies and corgis) had their tails docked so they wouldn't get trampled and injured by cattle. In working breeds, there are various reasons. Rotties were originally bred to pull carts, so theirs were docked quite close to the bum to prevent it getting caught in the cart mechanics. Dobies have their's docked (along with ears being cropped traditionally) so there is less surface area for an attacker to grab. They were originally bred as personal protection dog, and it is much easier to grab a dog with floppy ears and a tail than a dog with a stub and ears that can fold back along the head. Again, all of this was done for a specific purpose that related to what the breed was bred to do. Poodles actually have their tails docked as well, I don't think many people realize this.

No point. None at all. Some people try to say those breeds have weak tails that split, but all breeds have an equal ratio of split tails. This summer we were boarding a labrador (major tail waggers) whose tail split because his tail wagged from one end of the kennel to the other hitting the wall one each end. There was blood everywhere. His tail got docked. But that's no reason every lab puppy should be docked is it? No. Same with cockers and boxers and rotties. Its painful too. When the vet does the puppies tails, the whole clinic is alive with puppy screaming. And people think 2 day old puppies can't feel pain! Let me tell you, that sound could haunt you forever.

Some dogs like rotti need to have the tails cut off because if the tail is left on it will become a whip.
As for y some people do this 2 other breeds it's stupid. They might think it makes their dogs look better but it doesn't!

It's because the breed standard on some breeds calls for the tails to be docked. There's usually a reason behind it, for my breed, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the tails are docked because they would've gotten hurt doing the job the dog was bred for (herding cattle). Other breeds are docked for different reasons. The problem with this today, is the majority of breeds with docked tails aren't actually used for the purpose they were bred for, so it doesn't make sense for the tails to still be docked. Unfortunately, the breed standard still calls for docked tails, and dogs with undocked tails can't be shown in dog shows. Until this changes (and in some countries it already has) selected breeds of dogs will still have their tails docked.

Usually, the only dogs with cropped tails are sporting breeds such as the German Shorthaired Pointer and watchdg breeds such as the Rottweiler.

For the sporting breeds, tails are cut to facilitate hunting in thick brush. A long tail is apt to get cut or otherwise injured while a dog is tracking game. Hunters began cropping the tails as a way to limit the physical impact of hunting on their animals.

With the watchdog breeds, tails are cropped for visual reasons. When a dog's tail is wagging, despite the dog's possibile hyper personality, that animal is in a fairly content and happy (if not excited) state. If one observed a hyper dog WITHOUT a wagging tail, or without a tail alltogether, there would be no way of knowing if the dog was happy or in attack mode.

Hope that helps!

It started with the hunting breeds, so their dogs tails wouldn't get caught in the brush.

It later become the standard for these dogs showing in conformation trials...

And now people just accept it as the norm.

I got my Border Collie /spaniel mix from a shelter at nine months. His tail was already docked.

In the dogs *history* the previous owner mentioned the *breeder* told her that she should probably get the dogs tail docked. (telling me the breeder was a backyard breeder, or accidental breeding).

It wasn't necessary, since this dog was obviuosly not going to be a conformation dog. But thats what happens when you go to *backyard* breeders.

I feel sorry for my dog. He has episodes of *phantom tail* just like people who are amputees do. It so obviously bothers him at times. And was so unnecessary. In his case, at least.

Anyway....that's why.

I'll tell why exactly. I bought my 6 week old pure breed jack russel and had no tail at all.

here's a few reasons:
1. Pure breeds can make a lot of money in dog shows. pure breeds with no tail are not allow to enter shows, therefore owners cannot use them as money-makers.
2. tails, such as ears, are the "weak" part of a dog. in a fight, if these two parts get damanged the pooch is over!
3. hunting...too...has been mentioned.

but mainly 1 and 2. my dog's tail was cut because they didn't want us to buy the pooch to make money off him. they wanted us to buy him to love him as a pet, not as a "doggy-bank".

if u want a pooch with tail "included", i'd suggest goin to the farm...they don't cut it there...

I don't think it is right. My family and I just adopted a 6 month old boxer who has had both of her ears and her tail cut off with scissors. She was also beaten, hung by her neck, and starved. Some people cut parts off of a dog to get them ready to fight which is also inhumane. I am just against it.

Mainly for the look, but in some breeds (like the pointers) the tail is very easily damaged when they are hunting so it is better for the dog to just dock the tail.

I honestly don't know and don't get it. I have had three boxer dogs and each of them had their tails cut off when they were three days old, way before I got them. I think it's just mainly for show though i'm not sure.
