Job-wise there is just about anything you can imagine.

The Coast Guard is a military service and offers the same career paths as the rest of the military, with a slightly different mission and focus, and on a smaller scale.

Two of the primary differences would be: 1) The Coast Guard has "combat" positions, but they are still more of a security and patrolling nature in the form of "Port Security Units" that protect friendly harbors that Navy and Army vessels use to supply a war effort.
2) Law Enforcement, where most of the law enforcement careers in the other branches are in the form of Military Police, Security Police and Shore Patrol and focus on keeping military installations safe and basically acting as the "local police department" of the bases, the Coast Guard's LE careers focus on enforcing various US laws/treaties in the form of Drug Interdiction, Fisheries Enforcement, and the enforcement of boating laws

The Coast Guards missions are primarily: Law Enforcement (see above), National Security (missions as above that support military objectives and the protection of the US' borders and ports), Marine Safety and Environemntal (inspecting facilites and vessels for compliance to keep the envioronment safe as well as responding to disasters that threaten the environemnt ie EXXON Valdez) Aids to Navigation (regulations involving bridges over navigable waters and the mainentance of navigation systems, buuys and lighthouses, and of course Search and Rescue.

You can find yourself in rolls that are directly involved in the missions (driving boats, rescue swimmers, LE team members, Inspectors) or in various support roles handling the personnel administration duties, financial bookeeping, health services and food service needs of the services memebrs and families.

Guard the coast line against any infiltration and smuggling.

You can "guard the coast."

Usually you end up busting drug runners, smugglers, and goofballs violating our national fishing boundaries. The other branches will make fun of you . . . but that's because they'll just be jealous.

Sail all around and inside the USA. Stop smugglers, catch poachers, and enforce martime law. It is hard work as they are over worked, understaffed, and under paid.
