I think you should first get a trusty neighbor that will check on the house occassionally. Be sure to turn off the water to the house. You may also want to arrange to have someone take care of needed yard work.

Well I would turn off all my power & defrost the fridge!
ask neighbours or friends to collect the mail etc & even have some one come in every fortnight or weekly even & have the grass mowed or it might be good to have a friend that you can truly truly trust to stay at your home for at least a few nights a week seeing you are going for 6 months but if no one will be staying at your house you should tell the police you are going away & for how long
enjoy your trip

Check all the doors and windows, if you have a sliding glass door put a charlie bar in there so that it cannot be opened without removing the bar and unplug all your televisions and lamps that you won't need to go on. Put a timer on some lamps in your house and possibly a radio or a TV so that they come on at times to "show" that someone is there. Have someone you trust collect your mail and any "Free" newpapers thrown in your driveway so that it doesn't look like nobody has been there for awhile.

make sure everything in the house is turned off. We usually will turn off our water just incase something happens. (living in FLorida and leaving for a long time during the summer, good to turn water off, in case of hurricane).
Make sure neighbors know you are gone and have them check in from time to time. Let your post office ppl know to hold your mail. Stop paper route or have a neighbor pick them up so it looks like someone is home. We turn off the air conditioning as well. Have someone check to see if the pool doesnt over flow if you have a pool. Have someone cut the lawn.

Have a friend or relative check in on the house every couple days. Cancel the paper if you get it. Have some one forward your mail. Have someone cut the grass and just make it look like someone is always around.

try checking out house sitters.

if you dont want to do this, arrange with family and friends to make sure your mail box is cleared of papers and junk mail, that your lawn is mowed etc. it is best to make the house appear lived in, as people will be more likely to try to break in if they think you are away on holidays.

also, a 24 hour linked alarm would be good.

Definatley set up an alarm system that is monitored 24hrs, otherwise you can rent your house out to a close relative or friend.

lock the doors, ask a neighbor to watch it and forward your mail,, I'm not sure what country you are coming from,,, you might just want to pack your favorite belongings, bring them with you and file for citizenship when you get here.. guaranteed best country to live in ,its called freedom.............
