Sounds a lot like a pilonidal cyst, perhaps even a pilonidal abscess. If it is at the top of your intergluteal cleft, or as you call it, your a-s crack then I'm 99% sure that's what it is. If it is down close to your anal opening then it is something entirely different (perianal abscess).
There is a wonderful web-based support group located at http://www.pilonidal.org/, and for the sake of brevity I highly recommend you visit that website to get the full story on exactly what it is and what we do about it.
Should you go see a doctor? Yep! If it is a pilonidal abscess it will only get worse until it either ruptures or you become septic, go into septic shock...and then it ruptures.
The treatment: Antibiotics alone RARELY, RARELY work. If it is an abscess, about the only thing that will work is to - as drastic as this sounds - cut it open and drain the pus, then let it heal from the inside out. This can take a long time, especially if you're a smoker. The bad news is that they OFTEN come back after they're drained, but not always. If they come back or become a chronic pilonidal cyst then they have to be removed surgically, and this is best done after the infection is under control.
If it's not a pilonidal cyst/abscess, then it may be that you bruised or broke your tail bone (coccyx). If so, not much to do about that except Ibuprophen.
Go see your doctor.

This is what I suspect you're dealing with:
A pilonidal cyst is a cyst at the bottom of the tailbone (coccyx) that can become infected and filled with pus. Once infected, the technical term is pilonidal abscess. Pilonidal abscesses look like a large pimple at the bottom of the tailbone, just above the crack of the buttocks. It is more common in men than in women. It usually happens in young people up into the fourth decade of life
You might try this:
Early in an infection of a pilonidal cyst, the redness, swelling, and pain may be minimal. Sitting in a warm tub may decrease the pain and may decrease the chance that the cyst will develop to the point of requiring incision and drainage.
However:
If any of the following symptoms occur, consult a doctor:
Pain at the bottom of the spine
Swelling at the bottom of the spine
Redness at the bottom of the spine
Pus draining from the cyst
Fever with any of the above symptoms

The best way to guarantee lumpless mashed potato is to purchase a potato riser from a cookery shop. Another way you can make sure that the potato is lump free is to pass it through a sieve and add butter, cream and seasoning.

It could be a boil or a bruise. If it is very painful go to the doc, if not, take some tylenol and wait it out.
