i asked my dog "what is on top of a house" and he said roof roof. he is a smart dog but i was very surprised when he actually answered.

Most animals can communicate, but talking a language like English is impossible for most, they simply lack the ability to form the proper sounds. Parrots are known to be able to 'speak'.
Dogs cannot speak English, your simply taking something that sounds similar to their regular sounds; like 'bark', 'roof', 'root', Worf', or 'ruth'. I know dogs can be very intelligent, but they lack the necessary elements to talk a human language.

I saw a show on dogs in search for the best dog in Australia.
they showed one of the dog talking, one word, however the owner said it very hard for them to do.
If dogs can talk it would only be about 2%.

My cat calls me mama, for real. The first time my husband heard it he freaked out, when I got home he was standing at the door screaming, "you will not believe what this cat just ran through this house saying" I laughed because I already knew!!!
As far as my dog goes, I can say do the tim taylor grunt for me and when I would rub his belly he sounded just like tim taylor from tool time grunting!!!

No, the vocal cords of a dog are completely different. A dog can speak but only with barks.

for real- my dog can sing! its more like a howl, but the only song is amber by 311, she howls in the tune and everything, and when it stops, so does she

I think it is possible for them to understand us. My neighbors dog was in their backyard and my mom and i were bbqing hamburgers and he was watching us and i said'' Jackson do you want a hamburger and he I want a hamburger it was way cute!!!!!!!!!

yes they can my mom had an Irish Setter that talked and we had a Bassett mix that talked.

they can communicate through body language with humans. i'm not sure if you mean can they talk to each other or with humans.
