The foramen is an opening in the floor of the occipital crest at the base of the skull. The spinal cord passes through this and down through the vertabral column, or spine, through:
7 cervical (neck) vertebrae
12 thoracic vertebrae
5 lumbar vertibrae
and the sacrum.

Vertebrae are their names and there is a whole column made up of a stack of them (spinal column). You can't have just one bone because you need the flexibility to be able to bend front to back and side to side.
That bone that someone else mentioned is the base of your cranium and the big hole for them is the foramen magnum.
