in your control settings you should be able to find system restore. Then just choose a date to restore your system to (choose a date before your computer started acting up). If you can not find system restore, go to the search function on your computer and type in system restore. That's how I always used to find it.

If this a happens any time you open your IE. Do the following open the program and check at what exact time it happens.
Then go to the Event Viewer to do so go to Start/Run and type: eventvwr.msc
hit enter

And there are 2 sections you should look at 1st Application log and the System Log.
Check for the Error in this log and it should have a number something like: 0x00080050 copy this number and go to the Microsoft Knowledge base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx

On the right side there is a box to search for the KB type in the error code you got and that might help you.

The other possible solution is by updating your Service Pack.
To get the latest one visit this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx

Another option is to run a reinstall and this might help repair the damage.
But if you are interested in finding what the cause and source of the problem is the first step is the way to go.
Good luck

Can be caused by RAM overload or when we issue two or more commands too close together. It confuses the PC so it locks.

Try cleaning house for starters:

- Many users are not aware of how much RAM is used by wallpaper and/or a screensaver full of graphics. They run in the background and consume memory. (I have only 512mb RAM, run multiple programs simultaneously, and have set my wallpaper and screensaver to blank.)

I don’t do games, but I do know they are primarily graphics which need and use a lot of memory.

- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.
To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
- cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
- cl the icon for the program you wish to remove
- then cl Remove.
- This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.

- When you are working in a large file, save frequently to restore full memory access. (Your work remains in memory until you “save” it to disk.)

1. Did you run an error check? Open My Computer,
Right-cl on C:, Select Properties, Tools – Run an Error Check ( checkmark “check all and fix); then run a Defrag

2. Are you using Yahoo Toolbar? Run a full Norton Antispy.

3. From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart

3. click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup

4. click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)

All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
- Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If this doesn’t help, you should consider getting more memory.

"If you are having problems with Internet Explorer 7 hanging, crashing, silently closing or other bizarre behavior, an incompatible toolbar or other add-on maybe involved. The fastest way to determine if an add-on is causing the problem is to run Internet Explorer 7 with no add-ons. You can do this by going to Start, clicking All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and click Internet Explorer (No add-ons). This disables all add-ons from loading in that instance of Internet Explorer. If the problem goes away, you can manually disable specific add-ons to find the specific one causing the problem. Below are instructions on how to manually disable a specific toolbar and a list of known incompatible toolbars that can cause serious issues with Internet Explorer 7" per
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/aa740486.aspx

If you can, in Internet Explorer open Microsoft Live OneCare and run a "full scan"
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

A last resort would be to uninstall IE7 from ad/remove programs.
Reverts back to an version IE6.
Run a Microsoft Live OneCare, "full scan" and restart before reinstalling IE7.

Unfortunately, this is one of those Microsoft problems that can be caused by any number of things. This, also unfortunately, means that you're going to have to try a variety of solutions to your problem.

In response to other answers:
Defragging is good for your computer, but it's not going to solve this problem. This only organizes the information on your hard drive, it doesn't fix errors.

Trying to fix your problem: I will focus on updating your computer, this MAY TAKE A WHILE, SO BE PATIENT. During the update process, do not use the computer as it may interfere with the update process.

Step 1: If you have XP, make sure you have Service Pack 2 (Click Start, Run, enter "msinfo32" and hit enter). single Click "Summary" in the left column and on the right side of you screen, the second row will tell you what service pack you have. If it is not Service Pack 2, update it with the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Step 2: Update your computer using the Microsoft Update site http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Step 3: Make sure you have the most recent version of Internet Explorer. Open Internet Explorer, click "help" and "About Internet Explorer." A window will pop up. If the Version looks similar to this: Version: 7.0.1234.56, you do not need to update. If your Version is NOT "7.0.xxxx.xx" you need to update I.E. from the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx (link to download is at the bottom on the left)

Step 4: Scan for Malicious Software using Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en) AND Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134)
In many instances, problems with Microsoft products are caused by third party software that you've downloaded without knowing what it would to to your computer. The previous programs search out those types of software and remove them. Be sure to run BOTH of them, you can delete the Malicious Software Removal Tool when you're done with it, but KEEP Windows Defender and run it regularly--I recommend weekly--to keep your computer in good working condition

Step 5: Even if you've already had to do it several times, restart your computer.

Step 6: Contact me if you have further issues; with more details, I can give more relevant and useful advice. popennell@gmail.com
