When my dog lays down next to me, she always backs up and puts her butt against me. Why do dogs do that? what does that mean?

She is trying to get her scent on you. Its a territorial thing. She wants you to smell like her to show that "she owns you."

It is because in the wild, before they were domesticated, they butted up for warmth when sleeping. It gave them some protection from the cold and wind. It is instinctual.

This is also why some dogs paw the ground before lying down. In the wild, they were trying to make the ground concave, to escape the wind.

When they sleep in your bed, no matter what size the dog is...it may just be a little pommie.....they *all* take up enuff of the bed to *feel* like St. Bernards (at least mine do) ! lol.....

hahaha omg my puppy does the same thing.
When I put him in bed with me, he will clime up the pillow and face the headboard of the bed and puts his but right next to my face. I don't know why he does that but maybe he wants to keep his butt warm? Also I think when I face him he doesn't like me breathing on his face (he hates air blowing in his face) so maybe he turns so that my face is not near his face.
I dont' know but it's kinda cute. Make sure you keep her butt clean!

I'm not sure what it means but my dad always pats our dog on the hip and he always turn his butt towards us because he's so use to and he wants us to pat him on the hip. That's probably his or her way of trying to protect you.

That is the dogs way of showing dominance and ownership of you. Dogs are pack animals, and in packs there is a pecking order. The dog probably senses that ther is a more dominant member of the pack (household) who is the alpha (boss).

She likes you and wants you to know how much she cares. My dog does this sometimes. It just so she can know and feel that someone is always near her. And maybe she is having periods where she doesn't feel loved and this makes her feel loved.
