there's some good answers on here, but you're looking at $15+ for a flat iron. seeing as you're new to this all, you should start out with a cheapo one from walmart. but honestly, if you plan on straightening your hair often, you ought to save up for a salon-quality iron. my favourite (the one i use at the salon every day) is the paul mitchell version. temperatures range from 15-400 degrees! you can pretty much flat iron anything. it's ceramic, so it's much easier on the hair and it heats evenly along the entire plate of the iron.
if you get a cheapo flat iron, it will say "ceramic," but it's only coated in ceramic, and that coating wears off on your hair.
check online or ebay - you might find something decent!
brands to try -

a flat iron is the same thing as a straightener. it depends where you buy it, what size it is, and what brand it is. most flat irons i've seen at wal-mart or target were from $15 (for the normal ones) up to $40 (for the really good working ones) but you can always find some on ebay or something for cheaper

Flat irons are used to straighten your hair. Theya re about the size of a curling iron, often smaller. If your looking to buy one, good ones are made of ceramic versus metal- it's actually healthier for your hair as well. They range from $15 to $100 depending on where you purchase it. From personal testimony, cheap ones are awful- they don't straighten fast unless you take tiny little pieces of hair at a time. It's good to make a long term investment on them if you know you'll straighten your hair alot.

the classic length ones may nicely be offered from $50-one hundred on Ebay. My sister offered one some months in the past off of their. i purchased my Corioliss for $one hundred eighty at a close-by mall round an same time she did. inspite of the actual shown actuality that both between the flat irons artwork all acceptable, mine is extra effective because it does a lot less damage and receives my hair straighter in 1/2 the time.

Do you remember the thing we used to crimp our hair way back when? Well it looks like that only the part that gets hot is flat and not wavy. Costs about 20 bucks.

A heated hair straightening device with flat surface plates that clamp down on your hair and smoothly slide down on portions of your hair to get it straight.
