Is it still possible to receive a DirecTV or Dish Network signal in Canada (legal or not)? If so, how would I go about getting it and the equipment needed?

From a technical standpoint, the DirecTV and Dish Network signal can be picked up north of the border. They apparently do not restrict their beams enough to prevent Canadians from seeing the signal. It's just a matter of getting the equipment, installing it, and getting an accout set up.

From a legal standpoint, DirecTV and Dish Network are not allowed to market their service to Canadian consumers, which is why they ask that you have a US billing address. It's to protect the existing Canadian satellite TV operators.

That being said, a grey area exists. I won't tell you how to operate in there, however.

No, it's against their terms. You cannot legally use a US-based satellite service in Canada.
