Addison's requires a monthly injection of Percorten, depending on the dose your dog requires ( my guy needs 2mls) it is expensive. Does anyone know if there is anything out there that would allow an injection every few months? There are pills avalible but he would need to take up to 10 pills a day (5 in a.m. and 5 in p.m.)

It may be a lot less expensive to treat with fludrocortisone IF you are willing to use a compounding pharmacy to obtain the medication and can afford to pay for some additional testing early on to make sure it works OK for your dog (monitoring potassium and sodium for a few weeks). There have been reports of compounded fludrocortisone not working as well but it is a lot less expensive and it appears to work for many dogs. You might ask your vet to check into this option for you, especially since the lower long term cost seems potentially critical to your Dalmatian's survival in your situation.

I do not know of any way that you could obtain Percorten-V legally for administration yourself in the U.S. Florinef (Rx), the brand name version of fludrocortisone is usually more expensive than Percorten-V for large dogs so it is unlikely that a change from one brand name to the other will be helpful.

There are a number of veterinary compounding pharmacies and many communities have a compounding pharmacy in them (ours does) that usually will work with veterinarians.

Getting the medication at a discount site such as this> http://www.petsupplies4less.com/i_012NOV02-4_Percorten+V+Rx+4+ml.html?utm_source=pricegrabber&utm_medium=cpc
May be a big savings, depending on how much your dog requires and your local pricing. Here, it is $157 for 4 ml, which would be two months for your dog.

There is a way to remove the dog entirely. Here is the
recipe. Giving the dog enough walking time of 4 hours a week.
The kennel can offer a buddy that is very specifically to meet
each week. The full afternoon or whole day will help the dog
to face its aging status. When properly exercised 2 out of 3
of this condition can be prevented from worsening, or going
further. If the dog is really not sociable, it is also possible for
kennels to clear the problem. Really good behaved dogs can
get a bus guard job and earn the full keep. The riding around
in a pet carrier on a bus is used to get the dog review. Any pet
can be improved with running, chewing, and visiting other pets.

The only two meds available are Percorten-V and Florinef. You must have a large dog. Both drugs are expensive. Percorten has to be given every month or so. Some dog needs it every 25 days.

My cousion has a dog with that and she gave her people pills. Her vet told her about them because the dog version was so expensive. Ask your vet or research it online. I am sorry I couldn't be more help but I did want to let you know there was another alternative. I just don't know the name of the drug. There is also a website that offers financal asstance for dogs with addisions. Addisiondogs.com
