MCMLXXI= 1971

MCMLXXV= 1975

I=1
V=5
X=10
L=50
C=100
D=500
M=1000

you add each letter from left to right for ex: VIII= 8

when you have a smaller roman number in front of a larger one you subtract them for ex: XL= 40

more examples:
2000=MM

1900= MCM

1901=MCMI

1902=MCMII

1903=MCMIII

1904=MCMIV

1905=MCMV

1906=MCMVI

1907=MCMVII

1908=MCMVIII

1909=MCMIX

1910=MCMX

1999= MCMXCIX

hope this helps for now and future reference!

I 1
V 5
X 10
L 50
C 100
D 500
M 1000

When you put a lower unit in front of a larger unit it is subtraction.
You usually only go one size down, although you can use any combination to achieve your answer. It is just like the smaller ones.

35 is XXXV = 10 + 10 + 10 + 5
42 is XLII = (50-10) + 1 + 1
90 is XC = 100-10 or DXD = 50 + (50-10)
1999 is MIM or MDCDLXLVIV = 1000+500+(500-100)+50+(50-10)+5+(5-1) which one looks neater?
