The Coast Guard is considered a military branch, but is not part of the Department of Defense. We fall under the Dept. of Homeland Security until time of war when we fall under the DOD. We do have units serving in Iraq, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

Edit: There are a myriad of responsibilities the Coast Guard has. Different missions include, spill response, homeland security, search and rescue, law enforcement, drug and migrant interdiction, aids to navigation, disaster response and relief, and of course our war time responsibilities.

In wartime the coast guard can be transferred to the navy. this has happened in all the major wars we have had. I believe there are some Coast Guard units patrolling in the Persian Gulf right now. I don't know if the entire coast guard has yet been navalized but I doubt it. In peace time they belong to the dept of homeland security.
