The leading hypothesis is that having bare skin with sweat glands was an advantage for long distance running in warm climes, which gave early hominids the edge over quicker animals who didn't have the stamina and means to keep cool to outrun them. Humans are built for running, that's why we have huge butt muscles, by the way, which are not that necessary for just walking.

because we needed to adapt to climate, and we've evolved
but humans do have as many hair folicles as a ape or chimp
its just that we dont grow them all
