It's tako (蛸) -in kanji- タコ in katakana, but if you write it in katakana, depending on the context, people may associate it with the word "kite"

don-t get confused by writing and speaking. Word in Japanese are formed in syllables like any other language, and also has many onomatopoeic sounds used as words. There are 46 sounds formed by a consonant and a vowel, there 5 vowels and many sounds like diphthongs and one single sound. Their combination makes a word. But you may find a monosillabic word. When you write it then you will find that some words that have same sounds have different kanji and of course a different meaning. kanji are ideographic letters like those used in the ancient Egypt. a ka sa ta na ha ra ma ya wa n i ki shi chi ni hi ri mi u ku su tsu nu hu ru mu yu (some people say fu instead of hu) e ke se te ne he re me o ko so to no ho ro mo yo wo ba pa dza kya pya bya etc..... 衣 this is fukuro (fu-ふ ku-く ro- ろ for bag or sac) ふくろう reads kurou fu- ふ ku- く roo- ろう (for owl) 蜜蜂 bee (hachi) 八 eight (hachi or ya ) 凧 kite (tako) 蛸 octopus (tako)
