I have been giving it serious thought. You don't have to speak French or be a citizen of France. You can enlist under a false name as long as you don't have any unresolved criminal charges against you.
I'm just looking to get away from it all. I've served overseas in the US military for the past 6 years and loved it and am looking to be on my own for good.
I'm tired of the normal routine now.
The biggest thing for me is having to go to France to apply. If I were to not get accepted (I can't see any reason for this happening but I don't really have any idea about their exact requirements) then I would have to pay my own fair and spend a lot of money just to get rejected.
Does anybody know the height, weight, physical, mental, or aptitude requirements?

the main thing is once youre in, youre in for minimum 5yrs no ******* about. unless you're arrested because of the reason you were rejected you could expect the fare to be paid if only in part or as a loan. although you dont need to be able to speak french expect to learn a bit pretty fast- if only for your kidneys sake. the spirit d'corp is hardcore running and marching- you dont have to be a great singer either. expect to serve extensively in any african issues that emerge.

Man, talk about a tough outfit. You have no say-so when you join those guys, but they are a loyal, elite group. During "bootcamp" you can ring out if it gets too tough, but your fellow members pay the price while you wait out 24 hours in solitary confinement. Team work and cohesion are paramount. Every mistake made by an individual is paid for by all. You will most difinitely see combat during your minimum 5 year hitch. Ironically, a lot of the hymns and marching tunes you learn to sing originate from the thousands of Germans who had nowhere to go after the fall of the Third Reich. It's a hard life, but could be rewarding for you. I would think you better prepare yourself for the physical hardships before you leave. Good luck in your decision.

Also think about the fact that you will be under Frenchl aw, not American law. You might wanna research that first, see what some of the problems that could arise. I also believe that if they do take you, you have to renounce your original citizenship and become a French citizen... good bye civil rights....

I saw something on the discovery channel and the training was crazy. Marches through the desert with no water. It was nuts. Anyway, here's a website that might help.

You said you're "just looking to get away from it all." Remember, that you will still be on the other end of your trip. Is it you that needs to change or the world?
