Abreva. Kinda spendy but well worth the price it will be gone in a few days.

If you've had a cold or similar illness lately, everyone is correct with Abreva and the like- but ALSO avoid high acid foods such as chocolate (yes I know!), oranges and other citrus, tomatoes, coffee, and sugar--anything acidic. It's helpful if it's on the inside of your lip to rinse with a tbsp of baking soda in water. If it's on the outside apply a paste of baking soda mixed with a little water.
If you have not had a cold, consider if you've ingested a lot of the above mentioned food stuffs. You may have an acid/ base imbalance and this is how your body reacts. Avoid those acidic foods, rinse your mouth with baking soda after brushing, and eat some low sugar yogurt with the active live cultures. More food items with the vitamin Lysene (may be spelled Lysine)such as broccoli, green leafy veggies or an over the counter Lysene vitamin found at the grocery store may also be helpful. I was told about the lysene thing years ago and it helps a little but the biggest thing is avoiding the acidic foods. Sorry, no valentines candy. I know your pain!

I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!
I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!
I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.
This is the one I buy:
http://www.nextag.com/Herb-Pharm-Olive-Leaf-66659849/prices-html
You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.
Very cheap.
The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!
I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you what I went through...and it's now been 3 YEARS since I've had one!!

I usually use Abreva but the last couple of times it didn't work, I think it was too progressed for it..
I went to the doctor and she gave me Zovirax cream and also the pills. I only had to take 2 pills and use the cream, it was gone in 2 days.

Abreva is good it heals it quickly but it is costly. I was in pain one night from a fever blister on my lip and all i had was Neosporin with pain relief. Wow that worked great. Kanka works good but the applicator is awkward and it leaves a film. Carmex is good but wasn't strong enough for me. Kanka and Carmex are reasonably priced too.

sea salt on the cold sore will dry it up quick. You can also put vicks on it between the salt doses.
