I got my wisdom teeth removed almost 2 weeks ago and am currently recovering from two dry sockets. :-( The dentist packed them with medicated gauze two separate times. Now he's taken the gauze out and left them open. They don't hurt, but they feel really funky. My question is...what's going on in the sockets? I have two gaping holes back there, but is there anything covering the bone? Is it another blood clot? Should I worry about the sockets becoming dry again? How do they heal and how long does it take? I know it's a lot of questions, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere and my dentist wasn't too clear. Thanks!

Dry sockets are caused by blood clots being loosened by suction, usually by straws or smoking. This opens the wound to bacteria and it becomes infected. The clove gauzes helped the infection, and were in place long enough for the wound under the clots to heal shut. Now it's just a hole with a newly closed wound at the bottom. Since the clot is gone, you won't have any more dry sockets. Just be careful not to let food stick in the holes, and mind how you chew hard or sharp food. Be careful to brush the teeth next to it, but don't let the bristles get into the hole. Eventually, the flesh of the gums will fill it in and there will be a flat, smooth surface. Hope this helps!!

Blessings

When I got dry sockets, I think the problem was that food got into the holes. My suggestion: if the dentist gave you a syringe type thing that you fill with water and squirt in there to dislodge pieces of food, then use it. If not, go back to the dentist and make him or her give you one and explain things to you better.

Good luck, dry sockets suck. The clove oil they put on the gauze is so gross!

Hi there. I had the same problem when I had my wisdown teeth removed. My doctor left the holes open and to help with infections/cleansing he gave a serenge (sp) that I filled up with water every night, stuck it down in the holes, and cleaned the holes out with the water. Sorry, I honestly don't remember how long it took for the holes to close up. Dont worry about the holes. If you keep them clean, then you shouldn't have a problem. Just remember that whatever you eat goes down in those holes so you must clean them out every night. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I had my back tooth pulled out 4 months ago, it still isnt grown over yet, it took a month or so to stop being miserable, dont drink through a straw or any sucking on anything, it causes problems, also if you smoke it really causes dry socket, i still jab chips in it and it hurts so bad when that happens, but its about half filled back over

Dry sockets are the worst thing to get. i have had some... and they hurt so bad.. it will slowly heal in time..just keep it clean as you can. do put your tongue in that area..(sounds funny to say) cause it will decrease time in healing.. good luck...
