ok here it goes.....ive been talking to a guy online that i met on myspace. we have been talking for a long time. at times he seemed a little mentally retarded because of the way he would say things. but its wasnt so bad that i really thought about it to much. i had started to fall in love with him. anyway i agreed to go on a date with him. well it turns out he is alittle mentally retarded, but not as much as some people, just alittle. at the end of the night i let him hug me, and it was the most passionate hug i have ever had!! i still kinda like him but now i cant seem to get past his state of mind. i dont know what i should do? and even though i shouldnt care....what would my friends think?

Forget about your friends, try to be more practical than that. Where can this relationship go? How limited is he by his "handicap". Can he hold a steady job with a respectable income? Can he own and maintain a home? Can he raise a family? If you're looking for a serious relationship, consider these questions first. If he can meet these or any of your other needs, then I wouldn't think there's a huge problem here. But, if he is limited from a normal lifestyle, it would affect you greatly and you may want to reconsider.

I have a mentally handicapped sister and I have volunteered in caring for the mentally disable for many years....that being said....

you should understand before going any farther that the emotions, feelings and thoughts of a person in this kind of mental state are compound exponentially from that of an average person.

One, it shouldn't matter what your friends think, if they give you a hard time then it shows they have no compassion for others less fortunate than themselves and they are not real friends.

Two, if you do decide to pursue this relationship, be sure that your feelings are true, DO NOT pursue if you have any doubts about whether or not it is only because you feel sorry for him. Just let him down nicely and explain that you only want to be friends.....but be sure that you follow thru with this and remain friends. If you do this, you will have one of the most loyal friends anyone could ask for.

Just because his state of mind is not up to what your friends would consider "OK". If you have feelings for him, thats your business and not your friends. If they are truly friends, they will accept your decisions. If you have to dump a friends because of your choice, then thats what you have to do. Follow your heart, you know what you feel. Don't let someone else make you feel different. Love comes in all different shapes and sizes. If you are having feelings about this person, you found something so great.

I say it both ways. By the way the term yankee refers to anybody who lives within the United States, and historically the term usually refers to residents of New England, and in 1758 a British General named James Wolfe referred to the New England soldiers as yanks or yankee's. Mark Twain used the term too"A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court.

Reality is..your friends will most like judge you and him. If not to your face then behind your back, you can bet on it. The question is if you can handle it or if you care.

If you do decide to persue things you will quickly learn whom your friends really are.

If you like him alot i say go for it. Screw what your friends think. Dont be a sheep

The main thing is that you need to be safe. You don't really know this guy.

I would say this even if he were not mentally retarded.

Take care of yourself, and be safe.

Who cares what your friends think... if you like the guy then thats all that matters... you have to decide if YOU can get past his disability and not if your friends can get past it.
