In my family, we are expected to go to college right out high school and I am not sure if that is what I want. Many times I have been yelled at by my parents because I am not doing something that will help my chances for a good college. My step-dad especially gets on me because of this. I have yet to even tell my parents for fear of just more yelling. I don't know how to handle the situation.

Just figure out what you want to do. Then find a college for what interests you. Even if you change carreers later, it's ok. Alot of people do. College is a blast.....go to college!

College is not for everyone but it is a changing world and without a college education, you get the lower paying jobs. Have you thought about a trade school? How about going to college and start with getting your basics? You may decide you like it or decide on a career and continue with college. Take a look around you. Do you see the kind of job you would like someday? Does it take a college education to get that job? Do some serious thinking on this before you make a final decision.

Going to college DOES help, yes-so your parents are right on that one.

But I believe that everybody should have a choice on going to college or not. If later on in life you decide to take some courses, then that's great. If not-no big deal. Explain to your parents how you feel and tell them that you understand that going to college is extremely important but tell them that you are not entirely sure if that is what you want. Tell them that you would like them to try and support you and that you'd rather go to college when you are 100% sure that you are ready-rather than being pushed straight into college, no questions asked.

If they yell at you, don't yell back. Remain calm and tell them, "I don't mean to disappoint you or make you angry. I just want to think things through before I make a decision." And then leave it at that. If your parents won't at least try to see your view-then see if you can get a family member or family friend to help your parents see what you are trying to say.
Remember: America is a free country. We have the freedom to decide what we wanna do with our life. Don't let anybody try and force something upon you that you are not sure of.

(If it's advice or guidance-take it. If you don't wanna hear it, listen politely at least.)

All the best!!

No college is not for everyone. However, if you choice not to go to a formal college/university, then you should at least learn a trade of some sort. You need to have some sort of skill or degree in today's society to get a decent job. People just can't graduate from high school and expect to land a $50,000 job.

college isn't for each guy or woman, nor does anybody might desire to flow to varsity. there are a number of awesome jobs obtainable in trades that don't require a college degree. They require education of a few sort, yet they could be extra in line alongside with your skills, know-how, and hobbies. Industries alongside with mining, shape, transportation, and so on. require all kinds of workers who could have super careers with no college degree. often agencies furnish the education. Does your college have a education counselor? if so, talk to your counselor approximately those concerns and start to inspect your skills and hobbies by numerous interest and flair assessments (they are actually not like assessments for college) and you will start to get a extra sensible theory approximately what's a probability. you're able to have a super destiny with no college degree by development upon skills you have already got. It does not recommend you will not choose extra education, yet there are a number of kinds of coaching and guidance to boot to varsity levels.

College is NOT for everyone -- you HAVE to WANT to be in College and be willing to DO THE WORK to make College the Success that it CAN be in one's life ...

Now with that said -- have you talked to your High School Guidance Office yet (or your Guidance Counselor)/

I am asking this because it seems that you are confused, and you could possibly use some of the various career/interest surveys that are available to Students in High School. I also want to emphasize the benefits of taking the ASVAB (yes, the Military 's Interest Survey) -- remember, all of these are FREE and only involve a few hours of your TIME (which is there anyway) to take the surveys.

When the results get back, you will be able to see WHERE your interests lie, and then .. ASK for a mentor in those field(s) or go to lectures, or try to find someone in that field of study -- it NEVER hurts to ASK them how much they LIKE their positions/careers or how exciting their positions are (or .. if you thrive on routine -- then routine!).

So start the process here by going to your Guidance Office and take the Surveys that they will offer you. REMEMBER ... it ONLY takes YOU ASKING for these surveys to be able to have them available for you.

You should do what you wanna do and not let your parents run your life. I just see college as a steppin stone for doing something that'll get you payed more money than w/o it. Its great to do somethin you love, BUT love and happiness don't pay the bills and its a cold world out there, always good to be prepared. You can always wait awhile b4 you go to college. Do what you wanna do first then go. You're never to old for a good education

There is a colledge out there for everyone. I read a story at achool about this girl ,and her mom and dad didn't want her to go to college, so she got a secret night job and saved up for college. Choose college... Better jobs, higher pay, and hey, you don't work at McDonalds

No, college isn't for everyone, but I will say that it's very advantageous for you to go. It'll be easier for you to get a job.
Keep in mind, you can major in almost any subject. Figure out what you like...
Did I help at all?

I have the perfect solution for you, but you need to read up on what I've said to really grasp its reasoning:

Go to college and get your undergraduate degree in philosophy, that's correct. This will prepare you for all disciplines, why?

Oratorical, analytic, argumentative skills and much more.

You will be able to argue circles around ppl and read and write in a way that you've never grasped.

I am going for my undergraduate in philosophy. Had I needed to choose all over again, this would've been my path, had I known it when I was 18....I am 36.

Type in "philosophical gourmet" for your Google search.

You can go into many disciplines after your undergraduate in philosophy like medicine, law, business, government, public policy.....most employers are looking for skills that philosophy teaches. Most other undergraduate degrees, other than to a small degree, like English, don't come close to giving you.

Look into it, it's worth a shot.

For philosophy, I would say go on to college even if you don't want to, otherwise, if you don't major in philosophy, I would place college on hold.

Good luck.
