i'm thinking of doing a oil painting. what should i paint? ideas in detail?

An oil painting is only one media. If your assignment is multi-media, you must add more than one type of art material or media. Read the book, or at least the Cliff Notes on "The Grapes of Wrath." What sticks in your head or your heart the most is where you start for your images.
To involve more media you can start with collage. If you have a digital camera, incorporate some photos in your work. A video camera can be set up to film yourself creating your work to top it off.

I will paint something representing the misery reflected in the book ...dark colors...
