Your cat is not crazy; he is bored. He bites the cushions to move them because there's nothing for him to do while you're gone (Mine used to knock things off the counter for the same reason). I would suggest getting him some safe cat toys (make sure they have no stringy ends or plastic attachments that he could bite off) with catnip inside, and plant some "kitty grass" (you can buy the mixed seeds at a pet or hardware store...it's mostly rye grass) in a pot and set it near a sunny window. When the grass grows, he can nibble at it. And do you have a stool or low table you can put near the window so your cat can get up there? Cats love to look out the window and see what's happening. Along with this, try a sofa-size slipcover made of a slick fabric; then he won't be able to get at the individual cushions, and he will hopefully try the other amusements you offer. Most important, though, when you are home you should be sure and have some relaxing time with your cat--let him get into your lap, brush him if he likes that, just pet him if not. And if he wants to play, do that as well. I think if he can see that he will get lots of attention from you when you're home, and that there's plenty to do when you aren't, the 'bad cat' routine will stop.

He is probably just curious or bored and playing with the couch cushions. Give your kitty lots of toys. I also liked the suggestion above to get some little pillows for the cat. If he has some little pillows he can throw around maybe he won't mess with the cushions. Maybe you could even spread a small blanket or afgan out on the couch seat. He could then pull it around and maybe he would leave your cushions alone. Cats like to hide so maybe he is hiding in the couch. They make little cat tents and of course some of the scratching posts come with little compartments they can hide in.

I trained my cats to keep off our good furniture (we have leather sofas and armchairs) by providing them with their own furniture or rather with furniture they can sit on, perch on, play on. For example, I moved a big camphor chest by the picture window in he living room and placed a cusion each for them. I sit them down there everytime I take them to the living room, so they know that is their space. Next, I never ever allow them to sit down or lay down on the leather sofa and armchair either by themsleves or with me. And I tell all the members of my family never to scoop a cat on to their laps while they are sitting on the leather furniture. This way the cats know that they cannot claim those furnitures. But how do you discourage a cat from even coming near a peice of furniture? Some people use squirt bottles. I clap my hands real loud whenever they even LOOK at the furniture. If they happen to jump on it, I scoot them off right away and clap my hands real loud and say, "No!". Now they don't even LOOK at the leather sofas and armchairs. You need to let them know that those things are YOURS and you WILL NOT SHARE. Cats understand that. But you need to provide other interesting stuff they can perch on and play with too otherwise they will get bored and frustrated. Bored and frustrated cats become destructive cats - just like children.

I suggest you steam clean the cushions to eliminate any odors he smells. Then buy some cat repellent spray and lightly spray between the cushions and the couch, That should keep him off.

If he tries it when you are home spray him with water (either from a water bottle or a water gun) as cats hate water. I also have a male cat and he is a little on the nutty side but it took a lot of hard work and some serious water training to stop him from completely ruining the house!!

Does this cat do this only when you leave. If he does it sounds like separation anxiety. My cat use to drag a king size comforter off the bed and leave it at the door. You might need some behavior management. Look at this web sight hope it helps.

That cushion is probable even worse on the different section. Time to spring for a sparkling shielding plastic settee disguise and next time go away it on once you have your relaxing or "injuries". it is there for a reason!

get him a toy made out of the same material the couch cushion is stuffed with rub it in catnip and keep him locked up with it when ever you go out hopefully he will learn to associate that behavior to the toy.

Maybe you should get him some little pillows that you can put some treats or kit nap in and lay them in or around his bed, or put plastic on your couch. He sounds like he may need a playmate. Like a puppy! that certainly keeps my cat busy.

My mom avoided the clawing by having them declawed. I have also heard that taking orange peels and rubbing them where the cat likes to claw will keep him from doing it. Something in the peels make them stop.
Good luck :)
