It's not a cult. You can leave whenever you want. Other members of a ward may call to see what happened to you and see if everything is ok, but if you say you want no further contact from the church they will respect it. Tithing isn't required for membership or sunday service attendance.
To winterstars:
None of what you said is true, where in the world did you get that information from? Oh yeah, you "heard" it. Just shows the importance of not believing everything you hear, doing research and finding respectable sources of information.
To Ice princess: the part where skin color was decided based on which plan (satan's or jesus') you chose is just not true. (In fact, most of what you said is twisted or myth)I've been a Mormon for 26 years and that has never been taught. In fact your answer is the first time I've ever heard anything like that. Where did you hear that?
P.S. great answer on "Hilary Clinton as the Democratic Presidential candidate?" I can't figure out why everyone hates her for forgiving her husband either. I wish she had a better chance

first:
"Cult" has no accepted definition. It usually means a religion that you don't like. At one time Catholics considered all protestants to be "cults" and possibly vice-a-versa.
second:
It is always wise to get your facts straight. How could their be a "mandatory" tithe? You can attend a mormon church and never pay a tithe or anything else. Will they throw you out? How can it be hard to leave? That is crazy. You could easily leave whenever you want. How could they stop you?
It is absolutely not true that mormon's have a mandatory tithe or that it is hard to leave their community if you want to.
Go find a mormon and ask them or go to their website. Don't ever base your information about what a group is or believes from anybody who is not in the group.

Mainly my whole family is Mormon. I am basically a celestian who believes anything is possible. They are great people, yet it seems as though the church has drained their sense of free will. I am at a loss with this one. I do not believe in lables, so calling them a cult is just another way to put someone down. Just live and let live as they say.+

I believe it is a cult. If it were a denomination of Christianity, you could be a Christian without having to be part of their church. They also believe that you have to be baptized in the Mormon Church. Those are just a couple of the key issues that generally make a group lean towards cult.

NOT
however whatever you condemn the mormons for, can be applied to every church and religion altogether.
the difference between Traditional biblical and fundamental christian churches and the christian MORMON church of jesus christ. is that NO christian church has a testimony of direct revelation from Jesus christ and a commandment to BUILD up a church. Although now that i think of it Francis of assissi did believe he was commanded to build a church but it was quickly overrun by False brethren and Francis himself Rebuked his own disciples. btw he was a childhood hero of mine.
this is a great example to all christian nations. How quickly Satan joins a church and corrupts it. Therefore, it comes to pass that all religious organizations are corrupted through dark magic and cults. I ONLY know of ONE church, built up by Enoch that was able to Rise above the earth and was ascended. I know of two other societies that achieved a comparable PERFECTION but as soon as the devil entered among them, and people chose him, the majority of the people became corrupt through witchcrafts and sorceries and priestcrafts.
a priestcraft in any church is a cult, not built up by God.
if you read REV 18:4, 17:1,5 and 18:23,24, you will find that the church of satan uses sorcery to decieve its members, and for shame there are those who are the people of God who follow satan. If the nations are deceived, then so are the christians and the muslims and the jews.

Like any and every religion there are the extremist, but I have also known some mormons who follow all the same traditions but they don't alienate others becuase of their religion.
So basically I think every religion has some cult aspects to it the morman religion is no different than any of the others.

Actually, the tithe is not mandatory for those who can not afford it. Those who can are expected to. Difficulty leaving....really? After attending a mormon church for years, I walked out and trust me, it wasn't hard. You can disagree with them and call them names if you want, but most really are good people. Plus, if you consider yourself Christian, judging others is a big no-no in your religion.

There is no doubt that it's a big cult. I regard Christianity as a scam, and Mormonism as a scam of a scam. Check out http://mormonconspiracy.com/cult.html .
