Cite the Code of Hammurabi. That had nothing to do with religion and everything to do with making society work. It was indeed a code of ethics and morals.
Religion provides the fear that makes people want to follow the code of ethics.

Right and wrong DO not require a religion to figure out. Of course there would be morals without religion. There would be good people and bad people, and this was so long before religion
came into being. Whether a system is right or wrong is a funny thing to say.

You have hit the nail on the head. Unless one has an unchangeable standard one cannot have a set of morals other than based on popular opinion at the time and that will constantly change. Yet if there is a God and He has set what is right and wrong then we can have something to measure all morality with.

I believe its wrong to kill.
I believe its wrong to hate based on race or religion.
I believe its wrong to hate based on sexual orientation.
I believe its wrong in the most part to steal(right if its done in a robin hood sort of way)
I Believe its wrong to start a war for any reason.
I believe its wrong to eat onions on a saturday.

Religion does not give the standard of the law, God gives. We all have morals written on our souls. Without God's standards we are left with human opinions. : )

the term "morals' is not easily defined. I would avoid using it.
The very basic laws of Christianity is "love your neighbor" and "Honor God". MOST of our Laws fall into the first category. If you love your neighbor you won't be stealing, beating them or killing them.

There can be morals without religion. What we stress is that there can be no accountablility without the belief in a providence who will ask us to answer for our deeds.
