Like if u lay coins on a train track and let the train run over it... Does the coin squish instantly when the engine runs over it or does the trailers help to squish it?

The engine will instantly smash the coin. A coin can NOT derail a train. One time I was walking along a train track and noticed someone had placed a nickel on the track, waiting for the next train. I replaced it with five pennies. They're probably still wondering how the train did that!

When I was a kid I had an uncle who was a train engineer. We used to go put pennies on the track when we knew he was coming. He would always blow the whistle and wave at us. The pennies were instantly smashed by the engine and thrown off the track. After the train had passed it took us a little while to find all of the coins. Good times!

It is the total weight that is applied to the coin. If 1000 pounds per square inch is applied by the engine then a box car producing 500 pounds per square inch won't do much unless it is repeated. It is like striking a coin with a hammer. The harder the impact the more it will do, but if you repeatedly hit it with less pressure, it will have the same effect. The end result is cumulative, they are added together to produce the final result.

The engine of the train is the heaviest I believe so I would assume that it would flatten the coin the most, while the other cars do insignificant squish-age lol.

I don't know. I've never had much luck. The coin always bounces off the track. Need tape or something I guess. But I know this person whose dad worked for the railroad, and he said not to do that because it can derail a train.

I have heard though that it really works. Hmmm...

Engine smashes the coin and knocks it off the track.

I don't think the penny will lay there forever while the entire train runs over it. It would be thrown off immediately.

See the link for a picture of such a penny and a discussion of the entire phenomenon.

depends on the coin - if it be a penny it go squishy sqaushy like that. Right away. If it be a quarter, it must get to at least the second or tird wheel - then it go squishy squashy!!
