Yes you are correct. The story seems to be saying "ignorance is bliss". Or put more simply, "Stay stupid and obey!".
Keep in mind though that the story itself is ridiculous and certainly not true. Anyone that can not see the obvious evidence of mans doing in a story like that is a complete idiot. I can not possibly say for sure if there is a god but any being deserving of such a label would have to be better than what we find in the bible, the Koran, or elsewhere. To believe the stories in the bible to be divinely influenced is in my opinion a serious insult to god, if such a being actually exists.

The only thing that Satan gave Adam and Eve is the truth. The snake told them only the truth, they did not die, they were turned out into the world. Throughout the Bible, it is difficult to find evils done by Satan, God seemed to need Satan a lot. Adam and Eve were not able to make any decision but to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, they couldn't have known it was wrong, since they had no Knowledge of wrongness. Without Satan's trick in the garden there could have been no sapience nor conscience nor, in fact, the intelligence to have morality.

First of all Adam and eve didnt need morals they lived without shame. Satan gave them knowledge of Evil, which gave them shame. and it compromised Adams will to LIVE faithfully and keep Gods commandments. So it was not a Good thing, but it will be Good once all mankind is redeemed by the saviour.
As for the APPLE, this is complete MYTHOS. When i got the idea that God commanded ADAM and EVE not to eat an apple i believed it, and determined never to eat another apple again, as long as i lived. But behold, i was chastened and reprooved that it was not.

The word Satan means "self" Motivation is for self above others. The opposite means the reverse, giving away the best.
Adam means "(first) race from the red earth". The "men" were extremely hairy, long long arms, grunted, no language, no life after death, these first Asu...men
Eve: means angel race, heredity made them so high that when an eve man mated with a female Adam, the child of the union had life after death.... Some Christians have learned this history; they have read this history book titled Oahspe. If some of every religion read this history the world would prosper as it tells how to have peace in the world. Not everyone wants peace. Some love war.

Well personally, I am not a fundamentalist. Therefore I believe that the first book of the bible is just one huge metaphor for a greater good. However, is could be argued that Eve really gave human morals because the devil never force-fed her. It was her decision, thus proving in itself that we are mortals with a new sense of morals.
However looking at the other answers, Max Power brings up a good point.

Every good and perfect gift comes from GOD, coming down from the Father of lights is every good thing in my life!
Maybe that's where you get your morals but not Adam and Eve.

LOL
funny point
But if Humans did not already have Morals why would they have hesitated? God gave them morals before they ate the fruit. It was the choice to TEST the morals and boundaries that caused the problem. Good little pick tho :oP

They didn't know good and evil because they didn't need to. Adam and Eve were perfect and had no sin nature so they didn't commit evil. Satan introduced our sin nature to them which is why the world is the way it is today. Thank him for nothing.

They had the morality; they were perfect and had not done anything wrong until that time. What satan taught them was disobedience and how to die. He taught them the evil that they had not experienced before.

Wow, that's a really interesting perspective!
But when you think about it, when you're a kid, and you don't know anything about morals or the evil side of the good/evil spectrum, aren't you really more innocent? Maybe whiney and immature on occasion, but you know what I mean. :P
