To me, a guy makes a good first impression when he is open, honest, and is easy going when he speaks to me. I love gifts...but not from strangers. Be brave and approach her first, there will be time for gifts later. Here are two options...good luck:
a. if it's someone you've never spoken to and if she doesn't have a clue of who you are, then approach her before valentines day. Just say hello, you find her interesting and would like to be friends. Keep it simple, you don't want to scare her.
b. if it's someone you see casually on a daily basis, like for example at the coffee shop and you greet each other, then give her something simple like a single flower or a chocolate. Or invite her to coffee that day. Even a cute looking pen is a sweet gesture and very useful.
Good luck with this girl.

Valentines Day has become the most hideous, pressure filled holiday---leads to broken hearts, saddness, self loathing, and lots of money wasted. A simple card with well thought out words says it best for a new interest--anything else may make a person uncomfortable or could be disasterous if the effect is all wrong---keep it simple and hope that your intentions are easily understood.--- be prepared to be shot down---don't be mad--you did at least try. Just smile and hope for a chance to talk and maybe develop a friendship. Just be nice and good luck

A non-romantic type of thing would be a "sweet box of chocolates". Hershey's has some great personalized gifts on
http://www.hersheysgifts.com/ Friends give those to each other without the love thing attached. If you are more interested than just friendship, I would get her a simple bouquet of flowers maybe with a stuffed animal attached to the vase. Sometimes though, that might scare her off. Just be careful, she may have a boyfriend you don't know about.

A flower, maybe since she doesn't know you do daisies or carnations rather than roses. But I am no expert...it's up to you, Roses are very pretty. Don't like go all out and get a whole dozen or even a half dozen. Stick with just one. You don't want to embarrass her. And/Or a box of chocolates...but I think I'd like a flower better. It would make me feel special :-)

Send a simple bouquet of flowers - nothing too stuffy, perhaps a few slender roses tied in a ribbon with a handwritten card.
That would absolutely melt my heart. =)

Tulips. I love Tulips, or flowers in general, but roses are over done in my opinion. A really cute card. Nothing sappy, something funny.
