This happened to my oldest and yes it will pass through his system, but it may not be pretty for you because for the next couple days you need to check his stool to make sure the penny DID come out. If after the third day then I would tell the doctor and they may do an ultrasound or x-ray on his belly, but it may not come to that since it passes fairly quickly.

Good Luck

As a youngster I swallowed a dime...and it passed through. I suspect a penny would also pass. But I'm not a doctor or nurse. I would guess your nursing hotline will tell you the same thing. Good luck.

i am sure he'll be fine but do keep a careful watch on him. on monday a little boy in the 3 year old class at our pre school wasn't there. his mother called and said sunday night he had swallowed a penny. they took him to the er and they sent him home, saying it would pass. a few hours after they were home they gave him something to eat and he threw up. they took him back to the ER because they just didn't feel comfortable and the penny was stuck in his esophagus! i didn't get an update but they had him stay over night and were debating surgery late tuesday.

i am sure this is a freak case BUT just becareful! SD

Go straight to a hospital. Depending on how the coin has lodged will be whether is passes. My sister swallowed one years ago. Fortunately it went down the right way and it did pass a few days on but only xray can tell if your child is in danger.
Good luck

My son swallowed a penny when he was 1 1/2. I had no idea until I heard him scream, I checked his diaper and there it was in his poop. It should pass but if it doesn't go to the doctor immediately.

The penny will probably pass his system, but you really should take him to a doctor. If he is young there is always a possibility something could happen. The doctor can also give the child something to make it pass his system faster

The penny should pass on its own.

Unless your son begins to experience any abdominal pains, it should not be a concern. Simply watch for it to makes its way out of the body on its own.

Thank God your baby didn't choke. The penny will pass and come out in your baby's poop. Really try and watch out for things like that because my brother was 1 and almost strangled on a penny.

As long as he is breathing fine then he should be fine just call his pediatrician in the morning and they may want to x-ray him to find the year the penny was made because some contain lead.

I swallowed a penny as a kid. No big deal. It will come out within a few days. If he complains of cramping tomorrow, call the doc. Otherwise, be patient--it happens to a lot of kids.
