As long as it doesn't affect you in a negative way such as hyping you up or making you irritable, it is a great way to help you relax and fall asleep. I worked in a pediatrician's office and we recommened this to parents all the time.
If you're trying to fall asleep on a flight, you can also try Simply Sleep. It's made by Tylenol. It's basically the same thing as Tylenol PM or Benadryl but without the pain reliever or decongestant. You can find Simply Sleep in most drug or discount stores.
Some people find the scent of lavender calming and sleep inducing. You can find all kinds of products ranging from body sprays/lotions to linen sprays with lavender in them. Chamomile is also calming. It's avilible over the counter in supplements and teas.

Why would you want to be asleep before take-off? I understand that you are probably scared of flying and want to sleep through the whole experience, but in the case of an emergency during take-off you would want to be awake and alert so that you could get off the plane alive. Tests have shown that people who read the safety card AND watch the pre-flight safety drill have a better chance of making it out alive. Sleep once you are airborne.

You could try it, but only if Benadryl works for you. My sister gets scary dreams from it, and you wouldn't want that to happen on a flight. You could try Dramamine instead or if it's a long flight, Melatonin.

Benadryl is an anti-histamine. Anti-histamines are known for making people sleepy so it may work. But so would a sleeping pill if you can get one.

That is what everyone says. It had the exact opposite effect to our two year old. He wouldn't sit still. Try it ahead of time to see how it works. Good luck.
