hi,
for some reason i have a fixed image of hawaii; a relaxed life, beautiful surrondings filled with nature. For some reason i refuse to believe that there might actually be sprawling cities with pollution. all i think of is nice weather, healthy living of fruits and vegetables, a nice house made of wood that opens to the ocean. is it really like that?

I think it's like that if you only go to VISIT. Living there is totally different (like it would be anywhere). We visited last year. Went to Honolulu and stayed in Waikiki, Oahu. It was a bit like New York (congested streets, etc.) BUT we saw passed that and enjoyed the palm trees, fresh seafood and loved the ocean! I mean, obviously you'll receive different comments from those who visit from those who live there. In our hearts/minds, it was a get-a-way from our busy lives here in Texas. It was paradise to me. BTW, everyone in Texas does not wear cowboy hats and boots...LOL! It's different for every state. Make of it what you wish or experience.

Some of what you said is true. Hawaii does have good weather and the air quality is quite good actually and a lot better than some city like phoenix. It has a lot of beautiful nature and beaches, especially more so on the other islands other than Oahu. But, Honolulu on the island of Oahu is more crowded than the other islands and is also the most populated of all. There are many cars and people and the roads can be congested like other cities and many people drive into town from other parts of the Oahu island. But the air quality is still good and so is the weather... There are many tourists from Japan and from the Mainland and you can also see those trolleys around on the streets with tourists. But, the housing is very expensive there...

out in the country of Hawaii yes. Oahu is the most populated island of the chain and there fore will have the "sprawling cities with pollution" as you call it. Go out to the North Shore and you will get country. The other islands are less inhabited and therefore more nature. But just because Oahu has the cities doesn't mean you can't find beauty and nature and this island too!

ONLY FOR THE FRUITS & VEGETABLES. from personal experience, the lifestyle in Hawaii SUCKS! They got a huge problem with drugs (Crystal Meth) which leads to other crimes, the law is WEAK. they won't prosecute anyone with out permission from owners who's property were stolen, broken into or vandalized. The people are RACIST. If you don't speak Pidgin & they find out your from Mainland, you will be judged & treated rudely. You can have a nice house on the beach made of wood that opens to the ocean, but you need to have MONEY for that. The cost of living is ridiculous. The pay rate is LOW, it's not worth it. I think you should just consider a vacation before you make your move. You'll be glad you researched before making a bad decision.

You better change your image of Hawaii, because things have changed. Honolulu, is like going to San Francisco, only warmer, and your wood house that opens to the ocean, costs around 10 million dollars and up. They are developing here so much it is sickening. West Maui that used to be a very beautiful place to come to, is now full of hotels, and they are building more. Our infrastructure, is about 15 years behind everybody else, Our roads are crowded, we are always waiting in line at the stores, but somehow everybody that lives here manages to keep the Aloha alive in the Islands. You can go to out of the way places, here in Hawaii, like Hana Maui, north shore Kauai, Molokai and Lanai are both very laid back because the people of Molokai, do not want development, and change their Island to the ways of Maui. Thank God for those people, who refuse to change, because their land is more important to them than the all mighty dollar. It is a shame what the developers have done here in Maui, and elsewhere in the Islands for the greenbacks. I think they would sell their own mother for a dollar. I do not mean to disillusion you on Hawaii, as it is so awesome here, but unfortunately, things have changed. Aloha...........

I live smack dab in the middle of Honolulu and I can assure that it is not all sunshine and palm trees. Right across the street from my building is this shabby three story apartment complex overrun with "ice" dealers and users. On the other side is the Ala Wai Canal, most recently famous for becoming so polluted with sewage that a man who fell in died a horrible and gruesome death soon after (he had to have various limbs amputated before he passed on). In downtown (Chinatown) there are druggies and trannie-prostitutes and all over the west side, there are MANY who cannot afford the ridiculously rising rent and now have tent cities near the shore. That is the reality of this "paradise". Granted, I am not saying it is ALL like that, but the postcard perception of "paradise" is in Waikiki and the places that they (the powers that be) want tourists to see.

Depends what island. The big island is alot like that in some places. There is not much pollution but lots of drugs and such. I think Oahu is the only island with lots of pollution because of honolulu

guess again my whtie friend

you see, thats the governments goal, they spend majority of the money trying to make hawai'i into what you mentioned. in the process they make all the problems, not really make but dont do anything about them.

for example they rather make a monorail instead of get enough books for the school, fix up the pieces of **** they call public housing, fight the crystal meth epidemic, help the homeless and other **** like that. if you go to waikiki its like what you said, cause they spend all their money ******* paving the streets in gold just so tourist come again next year instead of fighting poverty and meth.

long story short no its not like that.
