As I understand it and have experienced it.
One has to be really willing to be totally surrendered and submissive to him and to be willing to live a life totally devoted and free from sin. Since most of us sin (yes, I'm a sinner) from time to time, it's very difficult to maintain that presence. The good news is that even if we sin, as long as we are truly repentant, God can forgive and a person can re-establish this presence of God.

Hmmm....from my experience to feel the presence of God, an inner silence is needed. I can't experience him in a church by any means. I find the best time is when I hike for miles and after the hike I feel calm and almost zen like. When I do something as a geniune act of kindness and you can feel the other person is truly happy and it made their day. I think he works through people, for example, when you are having a problem and someone is there to help. When you feel lonely one day and the next day 5 coworkers say hello. When you have a lot of challenges in your life that bring pain to you and after a while you start to feel strength and grow as a person. I think many of us are so busy and consumed with ourselves that it is very hard to see the things that are given to us. I am not a holy roller but I do believe just from my humble experience. I also think the experience is personal so everyone must find their own way to feel the presence.

I first experienced the supernatural power of God at the age of 18, after having told God to get out of my life, being embittered against Him because of circumstances in my life and in the world in general. One day, in a state of extreme despair, I came home fell on my face and started crying, when a voice spoke into my heart these simple words :"Maybe Jesus really did die for your sins"
Immediately I felt a profound sense of peace and love and light and forgiveness and acceptance fill my soul, driving out the darkness and despair and bitterness and hopelessness that had possessed me. I did not at that time know such a thing was possible, but found out sometime later that what occurred was that I had been born again, as described in John's Gospel, the third chapter, and also many other passages in the New Testament. Since then (36 years ago) I have remained in a daily state of an awareness of the favor and mercy of God towards me on account of Jesus Christ. I have experienced also many deeper experiences with God which time does not allow to describe. Briefly though, I discovered my initial experience was just an "outer court" experience; and there remains for the believer a deeper and fuller revelation of God which culminates in an intimate experience in His presence, in the Holy of Holies, through the act of worshiping Him in Spirit and in Truth.

You are still here arent you, I am sorry. It takes a trained eye to recognise the presence of god, the first step is to open them. Like so many things in life that we see but never experience. One can not tell you how to experience god other than to tell you that you must open up your heart, mind and soul to god. Thank you father for this day and all your many blessings, I come to you in prayer to give thanks and ask forgivness for my sins. We all have different ways. Wake up early tomorrow, and watch the sunrise. Man that is an awesome sight, to know he made it and that through him all things are possible. Even world peace, we just have to work a little harder. Gotta go, but I'll be back. Next time.

There is a super study out by Henry Blackaby called "Experiencing God". Many of the churches are using it as a group study.
There is also some free help with this on the web:

Ask the Holy Spirit in your heart. It is wonderful. Give it time. Everything is going to be so different then. Read His Word, the Bible. When Holy Spirit guides you, you WILL feel God's presence. It is wonderful. : )

Giving in to His will, obeying His laws and commands, asking to feel Him inside you or feel His presence. I feel it most when I am worshiping Him with loud music and with friends, or when I pray with my classmates. It feels exciting, calming, puts an automatic smile on my face. Chills roll throughout me when I ask Him what I can do for Him.

Some men in Turkey spin round and round in circles getting really dizzy. This they believe allows them to experience the presence of god. You should try it. It sounds like much more fun than wearing out ones knees in the local church
