where English is spoken frequently and there are a large number of American tourists. I'm looking for the cheapest area that matches the above criteria. Thanks for the help!

You're probably looking for something near Lake Chapala. Ajijic is absolutely full of gringos, but as you get away from it and go around the lake, the prices drop. Try the towns of Jocotepec or Ixtlahuacan as search words. For property prices, including those two towns, use the source below, which is an MLS for a few places in Mexico.

The other largest group of gringos is San Miguel de Allende, which has become way too chic and expensive.

While there are gringos all over Baja, there tends to be a lot of second home buying there, which has driven the prices to silly numbers.

I lived for 10 years in Mexico and we intend to retire back there, so I constantly watch the real estate market all over the country. Buena suerte.

Baja California Norte probably has the most locals who speak some English, close to the Border and frequented by tourists. Property prices have soared in the last two years but there are still some areas where you can still find a place, not close to the beach however. There are some new projects in the wine country, Guadalupe Valley worth looking into.

English will be spoken frequently by the gringos but not by the Mexicans. I assume you mean an affordable lot unlike the Lake Chapala area. You'll also need to be out of town in most places unless you want to spend $30-40kus and up. Also most tourist towns revert to mostly Mexicans in the summer ... so much less English.

I think you need to start visiting areas you are interested in
