Three friends go in to a hotel. Their room is $30. Each person pays $10. Later the manager discovered they had been overcharged, the room was only $25. HE gives the $5 to the bellboy to give to the three friends. THe bellboys says to himself" How do I Divide $5 by three people?" He gives them each a dollar back and keeps the remaining two to himself. Each has now paid $9 , right? SO.. if 25(they paid)+3( they got back)+2(he kept) is $30, Why is 9*3(what each paid)=27+2(he kept) is only 29? Where did the other dollar go?

It is in your pocket - - thief - - thief - - someone call the cops.

OK really 9*3 is 27 (which is the twenty five the manager has plus the two in the bellhop's pocket) then you could add the 3 that was given back to the friends and that equals 30.

So what you are doing is counting that 2 dollars in the bellhop's pocket twice - it is already in the 27 that you are figuring as 9*3. Then you want to add it again - no - stop it - it is already there (25 +2)

In addition what kind of hotel is this that 10 dollars is overcharging? I think they deserve to be ripped off if they are only willing to stay at this dump. Get a room at the Hilton for crying out loud!

I agree with Rickey W.

They actually paid 27 (Manager got 25 + bellboy got 2 = 27 was paid)

So, this 27 + 3 which is returned = 30

Have a nice day.

They didn't pay $9 each...they each paid $8 1/3 (25/3), got back $1 (each), and lost $2 (altogether). They amount of money each of the friends spent on the room was $9 1/3 ($25/3+$1).

There was an extra dollar in the $25 because 3*8 is only 24.

they each paid 9 but they should have paid 8.3333333
I think the missing dollar is the 1 dollar they should have received in refund but didn't
I'm NOT thinking about this any more.
I love this puzzle. But how to explain it is a mystery

they each didn't pay $9, they each paid 8.3333 cont. so it's not 9*3(what each paid), it should be $30 (what each totally paid first) - 5 (given back) + 3 (given back to the 3 friends) + 2 (he kept)

or

8.33 cont. * 3 (what they paid) + 3 (given back to friends) + 2 (he kept)

25 divided by 3 is 8.33333333etc. so the other dollar you are looking for is lost in mathematical infinity.
