Any foods not digested by the stomach get digested by acids in the intestines. Air bubbles often result as a byproduct of intestinal digestion and must escape through the anus.

It helps to chew your food thoroughly so that your stomach can properly digest everything in one go. Also avoid foods that are difficult to digest (sugary substances in beans and celery strings are a couple of examples).

The only way to relieve flatulence once you get it is to let 'er rip. Holding it in can actually be bad for you as the air can escape through the intestinal walls and into your body which can cause cramps.
