I can't take this anymore! It looks like more than half of the people on Y/A are semiliterate. Can we help them, somehow?

It is going to be difficult to choose the best answer. It is for the first time when I felt that people gave sincere answers and didn't try to attack the question or the asker. Thank you all.

Keep irritating them until they yield! Well, that's what I do, anal as I am. But sadly, there is no solution that can bring a noticable result. We'll just have to accept the fact that there will be people that won't use grammar the right way. Even as it grinds in on our nerves, we'll just have to feebly attempt to help them and then sigh when we fail.

Can't you tell from my words that I'm a pessimist and a hypocrite?

Some children were left behind, no matter the intentions of the "no child left behind" act. The educational system is failing us, my friend, and there's nothing that can be done to educate people about your question on this forum unless they ask.

you are not alone.
if i had any hair left it would be torn out by now.i honestly believe it is the fault of the education system.
the emphasis now is on communication rather than english literature and grammar.
may be as they age they may improve but i doubt it.
only necessity will force them to wake up.
otherwise they will spend a life being ignorant but the blessing is --being ignorant they won't know that they are.

It is just like two, to and too....some people just do not get it.

Maestro there is no word alot...it is a lot. A lot is the most commonly misspelled word in the English language.

Smack them in the head with a two-by-four. That has to be one of greatest pet peeves.

Its hopeless. These are the same people who believe that "alot" is a word when referring to mass quantitites.

oh lord... it's never going to stop.
the thing that annoys me the most is the fact people don't get that 'their' is posseseive, 'they're' is they are, and 'there' is a place.
how simple is that?

I don't think anything can be done. It's an epidemic.
