My husband's grandma may have died, but we don't know.... and his family wont talk to him. He found out through my niece... because she goes to school with his niece..... would you ever do something like this to a family member? have something major happen and then, just because you're mad at someone not tell them?

I tried to look for obits in the newspaper where his grandma lived, but it seems that they don't have any listings in that paper. His immediate family (his mom) didn't get along well with his grandparents (on his dad's side). His grandparents had moved in the last year or so also, which made it hard to get in contact with them. It's not like he didn't try... but his immediate family (his mom and sisters) are very twisted and will probably use this against him, as something to make him feel guilty for not wanting contact with them.... (we had to get a restraining order against his mom because she attacked us on our last visit to their house..)

No, I wouldn't. I lost 2 brothers in 2004 and didn't find out until I read the newspaper. My youngest brother was killed trying to
break up a bar fight only to be stabbed. Then just a month later
my oldest brother committed suicide. My family has been split for a
long time. We didn't get all the details for almost a month. It only
makes it worse, I know from my own experience. I would never
keep anything from my family whether I liked them or not.

My family and I have not been on speaking terms for years. But when tragedy hits. Everyone is told. Regardless. Unfortunately, all you husband can do is confirm the passing of his Grandmother. And if it is true. Attend the funeral if he wishes. People like his family are those one needs to avoid. Regardless of relations.

It depends on the circumstances of the estrangement, but no, all family members need to be informed of any deaths in the family.

No. I have plenty of relatives I don't speak to, but the death or illness of a shared loved one would make me call!
